Business - Finance (BA)

Bachelor of Arts
Randolph-Macon College

A major in business offers students the opportunity to explore theories and concepts from accounting, business, and economics. Students study in an active learning environment and begin to understand and appreciate the complex nature of business organizations through applied economic theory. A major in business prepares students for a career in all business environments and provides an excellent foundation for graduate studies in such fields as business and law. The major in business requires a common core of courses plus one of three concentrations: Finance, Management, or Marketing. All courses in the core and in each concentration must be completed with a grade of C- or better.

Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree An R-MC Major in Business gives the student a well-rounded view focused through a Liberal Arts perspective that enables students to think critically and problem solve in a myriad of roles throughout their organization. Students gain the flexibility to transition among different roles and functions during their career. Each student chooses one of four concentrations: Management, Marketing, Finance, or International Commerce. The faculty tailor each concentration to enable the student to pursue their individual goals and interests. Business is a career-oriented field that leverages interdisciplinary knowledge of multiple fields to prepare students to take a diverse set of roles in actual business solving problems in management, operations, marketing, finance, human resources, etc. Many of the students in our major participate in the Phi Beta Lambda Student Professional Organization and/or Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society for students in business, management, and administration. Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Students majoring in Business can add a minor in Accounting or Economics with no more than four additional courses. Given the interdisciplinary nature of business there are several areas that are popular minors for business students. In addition to the more directly related fields (Accounting and Economics) students often minor in Communication, Sociology, and Psychology.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Randolph-Macon College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses Internships: Students are strongly encouraged by their advisers to complete at least one internship prior to graduation. This enables students to put in practice the knowledge and skills acquired through the academic program in a realistic scenario prior to graduation. The school encourage students to take the initiative and find an internship in line with the career goals of the student and the school will facilitate internship opportunities for students if necessary. All business majors in good academic standing have an opportunity to complete an internship. Surf Projects: SURF offers Randolph-Macon College students the unique opportunity to conduct nine weeks of full-time research during the summer months, under the guidance of a faculty mentor. The SURF program allows students to delve deeply into an original research question benefitting from close, critical interactions with faculty mentors who support their engagement throughout all steps of the process, from formulating the question to the culminating presentation of their work. Study Abroad: At this time the business school offers two study abroad opportunities: BUSN 390: The Industrial Revolution in England This course looks at the development and consequences of the Industrial revolution in Great Britain from economic, sociocultural and technological perspectives. In addition to various readings, students will visit several sites in England and explore the primary question of why the industrial revolution occurred, why it began in England, and how it has influenced the modern progression of management. A special focus of emphasis will be on specific industries that were created or significantly changed through industrialization. Three Hours ACCT 481: International Accounting The International Accounting course introduces students to the accounting issues uniquely encountered by companies engaged in international business, how accounting is practiced in different countries, comparing the differences in financial reporting, taxation, and other accounting practices that exist across countries.
Doing More With Your Degree While in the program, students have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with a faculty member. Some examples of previous studies are Professional Ethics among the Corporate Stakeholders in the Mortgage Crisis(2009), Work-Family Conflict and its Relationship to Company Size, Demographic Factors, and Organizational Commitment (2003), Financial Crises and Stock Market Predictions: Tests of the January Barometer (2016), and The Influence of Alfred Marshall on Modern Economics Writing Practices (2015). Students also have the opportunity to travel through courses such as BUSN 390: The Industrial Revolution in England where in addition to various readings, students will visit several sites in England and explore the primary question of why the industrial revolution occurred, why it began in England, and how it has influenced the modern progression of management. Graduates from our program are employed with companies such as Capital One, Humana Healthcare, Northrop Grumman, United States Manire Corps, Verizon and many more. Other graduates have continued their studies in programs such as The John Hopkins University Carey Business School, Global MBA; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill MBA; Virginia Commonwealth University Center for Sports Leadership; Royal Holloway, University of London; Emory University, Masters in Divinity; and George Mason University, Master of Arts: Philosophy Ethics and Public Affairs.
Program Successes & Highlights Business Majors at RMC are in a tight community that creates multiple interaction opportunities over their stay at the program to create networking opportunities with faculty and peers. All classes are small, 30 students or less, enabling direct interaction between the student and faculty (as opposed to TAs as is often the case in large institutions).
