Considerations for Selecting Degree

Accounting is known as the “language of business,” and fluent practitioners that help ensure financial success for their organizations are in high demand. A career in accounting is prestigious and it helps to prepare you adequately for the business world. As an accountant, the financial data that you provide will be used by the leaders of your company to determine what steps they should make next to ensure financial solidity and profitability.

The School of Accounting offers both a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree and a Master of Science in Accounting (M.S.A.) degree. The 120 credit-hour undergraduate degree consists of the four-year major in accounting, leading to the B.B.A. degree.  Students may enroll in the graduate program, which leads seamlessly to the M.S.A. degree at the end of five years and the 150 education credit hours required to be CPA eligible.

Considerations When Selecting Courses

  • Create a schedule for all required courses that are shown on the VCCS to JMU transfer guide for this major. Pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered. Complete your first math and English courses in your first year. For help, see Transfer Steps and Resource Center at www.TransferVirginia.org.
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and a JMU transfer advisor within your first year. College Connect available in your account of www.TransferVirginia.org.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree

Accounting majors have the opportunity to double major as a method to earn the 150 education credit hours required to be CPA eligible. Popular double major choices are CIS (computer information systems), finance, management, and marketing.

Accounting majors that choose the M.S.A. Program to earn the 150 credit hours may earn course credit for an internship, and we offer graduate assistantships that cover up to 18 credit hours of tuition in addition to paying a stipend.

Program Successes & Highlights

The College of Business is among only 2% of business schools nationwide to have both business and accounting accreditation from AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Recently, JMU’s accounting program was ranked 18th in Top Public Colleges for Accounting Salaries by the Wall Street Journal. You can view more highlights for the accounting program at https://www.jmu.edu/cob/accounting/about/highlights.shtml.

A post-graduation CPA exam review course is offered on campus every summer. The CPA review course covers all four parts of the CPA exam using a mixture of interactive classroom sessions and CPA self-study materials. Together this combination has produced CPA exam pass rates recognized nationally by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA).

Based on a sample population, the vast majority of College of Business graduates are employed, in graduate school, continuing education or engaged in other career-related endeavors within 6 months of graduation. You can find data about the successes of recent graduates at https://www.jmu.edu/cob/prospective-students/polishing-performance.shtml.

Credit for prior learning (CLEP) is awarded on a per case basis for Adult Degree (Individualized Studies Majors) and RN-BSN students only and in consultation with the department of expertise, with the exception of military service credit. Credit for learning acquired in military service is awarded by the registrar's office using the ACE guide credit recommendation for study/experience listed on the military transcript and in consultation with the department of expertise.
Did You Know That...
  • Completing your Associate transfer degree post-high school satisfies all lower division general education requirements and increases the chance of completing your bachelor's degree?
  • Exceeding 3 years or 90 credits at your community college means you may have exhausted your financial aid at that college and have limited your future financial aid at: James Madison University
