Accounting (BA)
Bachelor of ArtsRandolph-Macon College
The study of accounting at Randolph-Macon College provides students with the opportunity to become fluent in the language of business within the unique setting of a liberal arts education. Students study accounting in an active learning environment incorporating theories and concepts from the fields of accounting, business, and economics. They learn to understand and appreciate the complex nature of business organizations. A major in accounting prepares students for a career in all business environments and provides an excellent foundation for graduate studies in such fields as accounting, business, taxation, and law. All courses in the major and minor must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
Program Overview & Guidance

---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon. Accounting is essential for a thorough understanding of finance, business, and markets. While coursework focuses on understanding the theory behind accounting, it also provides students with the skills necessary to develop quantitative information as well as analyze data for decision-making and problem solving. With careful planning, accounting majors are prepared to enter the workforce, sit for the CPA exam, or attend graduate school in accounting, finance, business, law, and more. Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | R-MCs internship program is probably the most “key experiential learning opportunity†accounting majors have. The ability to obtain real world experience is key to helping our students learn about the accounting field as well as providing them with relevant work experience. What’s unique about our program – students are not responsible for finding their own internship sites. We work hard to find relevant locations and to place the appropriate students at those sites. Hands-on learning in the classroom comes about in a variety of ways. Students work in teams to solve problems and cases during class. In Intermediate Accounting, students play Monopoly as part of their review of Introductory Accounting principles. Legos are used to illustrate the components of manufacturing costs. These are used in some other programs but not a large number. |
Doing More With Your Degree | While in the program, students have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with a faculty member. Students also have the opportunity to participate in January term travel to England – International Accounting: Become immersed in the culture of Great Britain while also learning about Great Britain’s influence on the development of the accounting profession. Gain an understanding of the similarities and differences between International and U.S. accounting standards. Includes day trips to such sites as Stonehenge, Oxford, London, and Stratford-Upon-Avon. Graduates from our program are employed with companies such as Keiter CPA Grant Thornton CPA KPMG Chesterfield County Virginia Retirement Systems Genworth PB Mares CPAs Adams, Jenkins & Cheatham CPA Myers and Stauffer LC MorganFranklin Consulting BMSS, LLC Other graduates have continued their studies in programs such as College of William and Mary University of Virginia Virginia Tech North Carolina State University The Citadel Virginia Commonwealth University George Mason University Yount, Hyde & Barbour, PC Clemson University University of North Alabama |
