Associate of Applied Science Degree in Accounting

The demand for qualified personnel in accounting has significantly increased due to advances in technology and the increased complexity of the business environment. The Associate of Applied Science Degree curriculum in Accounting is designed for persons who seek full-time employment in an accounting field immediately upon completion of the degree. Persons seeking their first employment in an accounting position and those presently in accounting who are seeking to upgrade their skills may benefit from this curriculum. Additionally, most four-year colleges will accept many of the courses for transfer credit.

Outcomes

1. Apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to the recording and reporting of business transactions. 2. Demonstrate introductory knowledge of the principles of financial accounting and, in particular, the accounting cycle through the recording of financial transactions and the preparation of financial reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). 3. Apply basic Managerial Accounting concepts, including costing systems, budgets, and cost-volume-profit analysis. 4. Apply ethical principles to solve accounting dilemmas. 5. Perform basic accounting functions using Excel. 6. Use QuickBooks in a business setting. 7. Process payroll manually. 8. Analyze individual taxpayer scenarios in order to prepare income tax returns, using the current Internal Revenue Code.

Considerations for Selecting Degree This degree can be completed entirely online. There is an internship in the fourth semester. Students are placed in organizations as close to home as possible. Basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and basic algebra are required, which is covered in the first accounting class.

Course work should be completed in the order it appears in the catalog.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
