Transfer Guides are designed to maximize transfer credit as students complete their associate degree at the community college before transferring to the bachelor's degree program. If you are a current Virginia Community College student or are planning to start at a Virginia Community College before transferring to this institution and program, please follow the Transfer Guide to plan your courses at the community college. The following Transfer Guide(s), applicable to this program, are available in the Resource Center. If there is a program-specific Transfer Guide and a general or general studies Transfer Guide, you are advised to follow the program-specific Transfer Guide. Please see your community college advisor for assistance in selecting the best pathway.

As part of the nationally recognized JMU College of Business, the marketing major prepares students to assume professional and leadership roles in the rapidly changing, technically-oriented and competitive world of marketing by helping students develop specialized skills in the management of customer relationships through the creation, communication and delivery of value to customers. The curriculum provides a solid foundation of the knowledge and skills needed to develop effective marketing efforts. The major offers a concentration in Professional Sales and an area of emphasis in Digital Marketing.

Students gain knowledge and experience through general education courses, the College of Business core curriculum, and the marketing major with various combinations of required and elective marketing courses. Marketing faculty and staff work with students in small classes and individually to help them build leadership and team skills. Strong connections are made between in-class study and the business world through experiential course projects, case studies, simulations, independent studies and internships.

Marketing majors conform to the general structure of the B.B.A. degree program. The B.B.A. degree in marketing requires a minimum of 120 credit hours of undergraduate course work.

Considerations for Selecting Degree

We take great pride in a tradition of vibrant instruction within a highly innovative and experiential marketing curriculum.  If you are personable and enjoy working with data and in teams to solve challenging problems, then marketing might be for you.

Considerations When Selecting Courses

  • MTH courses typically must be taken in specific orders to satisfy prerequisite requirements. As you plan your MTH courses based on the transfer guide, work backwards from the highest numbered courses to determine a path of courses that will take you from your initial course placement to the higher numbered courses. Be sure to consult an advisor at your community college for information about the semesters in which specific courses are offered.
  • For students interested in taking applied statistics courses, note that MTH 245 satisfies the prerequisite for many 300-level statistics electives.
  • If you are considering double majoring or adding a minor, plan to complete preliminary courses for those programs, if possible, before transfer.
  • Create a schedule for all required courses that are shown on the VCCS to JMU transfer guide for this major. Pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered. Complete your first math and English courses in your first year. For help, see Transfer Steps and Resource Center at www.TransferVirginia.org.
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and a JMU transfer advisor within your first year. College Connect available in your account of www.TransferVirginia.org.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and James Madison University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree

The emerging digital marketing sector is attracting marketing graduates interested in paid search, display advertising, marketing analytics, search engine optimization, content marketing, mobile marketing, email marketing and social media. Students who graduate with the digital marketing concentration will understand the foundational theory and best practices related to driving website traffic and making data-driven decisions. Students will complete industry-recognized certifications within the digital marketing electives and will be encouraged to complete other?external?certifications that relate to their career goals. Students will learn to use appropriate industry tools for the classes in which they enroll such as website builders, email service providers, content creation tools, social media planning dashboards and keyword planning tools. Students will learn the development process for digital marketing platforms and to connect the creation of materials to marketing strategies and measurable objectives. After completing the concentration, students will understand the use of digital marketing in contributing to the overall achievement of the organization's business objectives.

The professional sales concentration prepares students for careers in sales that focus on business customers and, in most cases, on the selling of relatively complex?and technical products and services.

Program Successes & Highlights

Credit for prior learning (CLEP) is awarded on a per case basis for Adult Degree (Individualized Studies Majors) and RN-BSN students only and in consultation with the department of expertise, with the exception of military service credit. Credit for learning acquired in military service is awarded by the registrar's office using the ACE guide credit recommendation for study/experience listed on the military transcript and in consultation with the department of expertise.
