Doctor of Pharmacy

Doctorate of Pharmacy
Appalachian College of Pharmacy

The Appalachian College of Pharmacy, a college of higher education conferring the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, provides academic, scientific, and professional pharmacy education to address the health-related needs of rural and underserved communities, particularly those in Appalachia, through education, service, and scholarship. The College is the only three-year Doctor of Pharmacy program in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Therefore, our students graduate and enter the workforce one year earlier than graduates from a traditional four-year program and they do so with equivalent classroom hours and clinical training. The campus is in Oakwood, Virginia, which is located in the Appalachian Mountain range of Southwest Virginia.

Outcomes

The Appalachian College of Pharmacy prepares students to determine pharmacotherapy and therapeutic outcomes, prepare and dispense medication, and implement and evaluate information for optimal health care for their patients. Upon graduation, students sit for the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) which is utilized by the state boards of pharmacy as part of their assessment of a students competence to practice pharmacy.

Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree Pharmacy combines science, health care, computer technology, business, math and counseling. Often, jobs in the sciences involve limited interaction with the public, but pharmacy offers a rare balance of independence and interaction with patients, which can be very appealing if you’re a “people person.” If you’re looking for adventure, you might be surprised to learn that pharmacy can be very exciting; there’s a place for pharmacists out on the front lines, offering services during natural disasters, epidemics, and other crises.
Program Requirement Notes
Program Requirement Notes

The Appalachian College of Pharmacy requires 72 credit hours of prerequisite courses prior to enrollment. The College does not require an entrance exam or degree.

Considerations When Selecting Courses

The required associate level courses leading to our Doctorate of Pharmacy degree are included within a pre-med pathway at most community colleges. Connect with an advisor at your community college to map out your pathway today.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Appalachian College of Pharmacy within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses Once admitted there are additional enrollment requirements. These include seat deposit, immunizations, criminal background check, health insurance and intern license from the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
Doing More With Your Degree Pharmacists are medication experts who enhance patient care and promote wellness.  You will use your professional knowledge as a pharmacist to prepare and dispense prescriptions, ensure medicines and doses are correct, prevent harmful drug interactions, and counsel patients on the safe and appropriate use of their medications. As a pharmacist, you will have unique and specialized expertise about the composition of medicines, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties, as well as their manufacture and use. Other health care professionals will rely on you to select and administer medications that offer the best results and quality of life for a particular patient. As a pharmacist you may prepare personalized medications, participate in patient rounds at the hospital, reduce the spread of infections, conduct research or clinical trials, or focus on a specific patient population or disease state (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, asthma, HIV, and pain management).
Program Successes & Highlights The Appalachian College of Pharmacy has a 5 year average graduation rate of 88%. The Appalachian College of Pharmacy has a 5 year average North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) first time pass rate of 76.6%.
