Considerations for Selecting Degree This major provides an opportunity for students to enter a career which promotes lifelong physical activity and wellbeing. Small class sizes provide an opportunity to build strong relationships with your professors and your peers.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Students are encouraged to complete their internship at some point during their junior or senior year.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Emory & Henry University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses Students are required to complete an internship in order to gain real “world of work” experiences. This can be completed on or off campus in a paid or unpaid position.
Doing More With Your Degree Students with this degree can enter careers specific to health, wellness, coaching, or other areas related to sport and/or physical activity. Students also prepare for graduate study in physical therapy and for varied types of work in settings such as municipal recreation departments, retirement communities, fitness centers, resort areas, and hospitals. Those seeking graduate course work in teaching, counseling, sport management, or administration have continued their studies at East Tennessee State University, Indiana University, Radford University, Ohio University, the University of Tennessee, the University of Virginia, Duke University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Program Successes & Highlights Instruction in the Emory & Henry Health and Human Performance Department is distinctive for several reasons. First is our commitment to a well-rounded liberal arts education. We believe that students who gain wide exposure to history, literature, and culture have the potential to show the greatest leadership and management skills in physical education teaching, coaching, sport management, recreation, or any other chosen area of Health and Human Performance. Second, is our commitment to instill in our students the motivation to condition mind and body and to relate knowledge and experience in achieving lifetime wellness. Third, we believe students need to understand the major underlying issues in the field while also gaining specific experience. In class, students grapple with significant issues in areas such as liability, wellness, ethical behavior, and leadership. Outside class, many forms of hands-on experience are available for teaching practical applications.

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Completion of the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program will guarantee completion of the 'Think, Understand & Create' liberal arts core component of the E&H undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major. Other elements of the core curriculum may need to be met if not taken as part of the AA/AS degree. Students will be required to complete CORE 200 and CORE 300 at E&H. Students completing at least 56 credits following high school graduation but before transferring to E&H are exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, and Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship.
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School Only students who have completed college credit elsewhere following high school graduation will be exempt from the Core Curriculum requirement. Completion of courses that satisfy elements of the Care & Cultural Competency and Think, Understand & Create elements of the curriculum will be awarded equivalent credit with an earned grade of C or better. Students completing the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program concurrently with their high school diploma will not be exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, or Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship.
Credit for Prior Learning Emory & Henry awards credit for AP, IB, and CLEP. Please see the credit equivalency charts to determine the needed scores for course credit. Currently, we do not award academic credit for industry or military training.
