Randolph-Macon College
Each student must confer with the major advisor to plan a program that takes into account specific interests and career goals. The major requirements have been designed to meet the educational needs of students interested in careers in chemistry, medicine, K-12 education, forensics, business, and law.
Chemistry majors can select among five different programs of emphasis all of which are ACS certified:
- General Emphasis
- Biochemistry Emphasis
- Research Emphasis
- Forensic Science Emphasis
- Education Emphasis
Students who intend to pursue a career in the medical field (medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and pharmacy) after graduation are encouraged to pursue the Biochemistry Emphasis. This emphasis is designed to meet the requirements of many allied health professions while providing the student with a firm foundation in chemistry, biochemistry, and biology. Interested students should contact Dr. Green, faculty advisor of the biochemistry emphasis.
Students who intend to pursue a career in chemistry after graduation are encouraged to pursue the Research Emphasis. This emphasis is designed to support students who want to earn a Ph.D. or master's degree in chemistry after graduation. Interested students should contact Dr. Schreiner, faculty advisor of the research emphasis.
Students who are interested in K-12 education in chemistry should pursue the Education Emphasis. This emphasis works in conjunction with the minor in education to enable students to obtain teacher certification after graduation from Randolph-Macon. Interested students should contact Dr. Borowski, advisor of the education emphasis.
Students who intend to work in forensic science after graduation should pursue the Forensic Science Emphasis. Interested students should contact Dr. Borowski, advisor of the forensic science emphasis.

| Considerations for Selecting Degree | Randolph-Macon College chemistry graduates pursue careers in fields from health care to forensic science, biotechnology to pharmaceutical research. Our students are strongly encouraged to participate in research projects, internships, or independent study. Research isn't just a classroom exercise either; chemistry students present their work at professional conferences (reginal, national and international) and events such as the college's Student Symposium of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Work. Student Affiliates Chapter of the American Chemical Society (won outstanding chapter for 2021-2022 Phi Lambda Upsilon (chemistry honorary society which is the first honor society dedicated to a single discipline) Pre-Health Society Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon. |

| Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | Key experiential learning opportunities. · Our students learn through apprentice-style instruction in laboratory courses · Our students engage in active learning in lecture courses such as guided inquiry, group problem solving, molecular modeling, and more · The chemistry curriculum incorporates instrument usage from the very first laboratory class through the entire curriculum. Instrumentation is the backbone of modern chemical research, so it is both a very marketable skill and fundamental to post-graduate studies. · Our students learn to run the instruments themselves as early as their sophomore year, in contrast to large universities where they would learn the theory without direct experience. · Many of our students engage in independent, cutting-edge research under the guidance of a faculty member, earning college credit during the academic year or a paycheck during the summer |
| Doing More With Your Degree | While in the program, students have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with a faculty member. Some examples of previous studies are: Ana Leal (RMC ’22) hails from Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Brazil. She carried out her Senior Thesis research project with Dr. Serge Schreiner in the Chemistry Department for 4 years including 3 summers in the SURF program. The title of her thesis was “Synthesis, Characterization, and biological activity of hydroxylated diphosphine complexes ruthenium, platinum, and palladiumâ€. This work was supported by a Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship and the Jackson Professorship. Ana presented this work at the ACS Meetings in San Diego, California and San Juan, Puerto Rico. She has started her graduate studies in the Chemistry Department at Northwestern University in Chicago Michael Stopper (RMC ’22) comes from Chantilly, VA. He carried out his Senior Thesis research project with Dr. John Thoburn in the Chemistry Department including a summer SURF project. The title of his thesis was “Synthesis of dicyanoazulene: a new guest for a self-assembled metal organic cubeâ€. This work was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Michael presented this work at the ACS Meeting in San Diego, California. He has begun his graduate studies in the Chemistry Department at MIT in Boston. Devin Teri (RMC ’22) hails from Fredericksburg, VA. She carried out research in several different labs completing her Senior Thesis research project with Dr. Nora Green in the Chemistry Department. The title of her thesis was “CBD oils and their effect on P460 Metabolismâ€. Devin has begun her graduate studies in Toxicology at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Students also have the opportunity to travel through courses such as Chem 160: Chemistry of Winemaking Graduates from our program are employed with companies such as: FBI Academy, Quantico WestRock, Richmond New Market, Richmond Virginia Division of Division of Consolidated Labs, Richmond Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Richmond Other graduates have continued their studies in programs such as: Graduate School: MIT, UVA, Northwestern University, Duke, UNorth Carolina Chapel Hill, University of Texas, Austin, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, North Carolina State University, Indiana University Professional Schools: Medical College of Virginia, University of Virginia, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Medical School of South Carolina |
| Program Successes & Highlights | RMC Chemistry is the number 1 producer of women graduates earning doctorates in chemistry in the country (size -adjusted, from: Ransom, T.; Gebhardt, Z.; Knepler, E.; Selfa, L. Strengthening the STEM Pipeline Part II: The Contributions of Small and Mid-Sized Independent Colleges in Preparing Underrepresented Students in STEM; 2019) Students who engage in research regularly present their findings at national and international conferences at places like Los Angeles, New Orleans, Puerto Rico, and Australia. The chemistry department is one of the best equipped liberal arts institutions in the country. We have two NMR spectrometers (400 and 500 MHz) and we have a single crystal X-ray diffractometer. The chemistry program is accredited by the American Chemical Society (one of only 5 VFIC schools) The Chemistry department is the largest contributor to the SURF program. 90% of chemistry majors who complete a SURF project go on to a professional school. |

| Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Students admitted under our guaranteed admissions agreement are guaranteed completion of most general education requirements.
