BS in Chemistry
Bachelor of ScienceHollins University
By nurturing the student’s intellect and by fostering the student’s growth of literacy in science and technology, the Bachelor of Arts (BS) degree program in Chemistry prepares the student to meet the challenges of a complex global society. Facilitated by close working relationships with faculty, students receive expert theoretical and practical instruction in all fundamental areas of modern chemistry, including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. Two program options are available: chemistry major or chemistry major with a biochemistry concentration. These programs will qualify you for graduate study in many fields related to chemistry such as: biochemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, medicine, veterinary medicine, and pharmacy. Furthermore, this program will prepare you to teach chemistry at the high school level or to work in chemical industry.
Outcomes
SLO 1: Students will be able to understand and apply scientific vocabulary; understand and analyze data and draw appropriate conclusions; understand and apply the methodology of at least one of the sciences for making observations and carrying out experiments. SLO 2: Students will be able to apply laboratory techniques and instrumentation to solve problems in chemistry. SLO 3: Students will be able to successfully complete an integrated research experience, which will have a literature component, a laboratory component, a written-communication component, and an oral-communication component.
