The chemistry major at Longwood provides fundamental training in general, analytical, organic, physical, and inorganic chemistry so that graduates may pursue graduate study or careers in research, industry, teaching, or a health-related profession. All students majoring in chemistry are required to complete courses in chemistry, mathematics, and physics. Those students wishing to prepare for dental, medical, or pharmacy school complete additional courses to satisfy pre-professional requirements. Students are encouraged to enroll in research courses in chemistry in order to increase their competency in working in the laboratory. The program in chemistry is rigorous, but it is flexible enough for students to take a second major. Students majoring in other areas may elect to minor in chemistry. The chemistry minor requires 23-24 semester hours: general chemistry (8 hours), organic chemistry (8 hours), quantitative analysis (4 hours), and a chemistry elective (3-4 hours). No grade below C- in chemistry courses is accepted for the graduation requirements for the major or minor in chemistry. A student may seek a secondary teaching endorsement in chemistry. This program consists of courses required for a chemistry major and additional courses in BIOL, EASC, EDUC, SCED, and SPED. Interested students should meet with the Secondary Science Education Program Coordinator for advising on preparation for secondary science teaching.

| Considerations for Selecting Degree | A chemistry degree with a biochemistry concentration is a versatile degree that will prepare you for work in laboratory settings, graduate programs, and any medical field (including nursing, medicine, dentistry, veterinary school, etc.) The degree is math intensive, requiring statistics and calculus up through calculus II. All chemistry students participate in a research experience during their time at Longwood. The program is small, allowing a lot of student interaction with faculty, but chemistry students must be prepared to work hard, learn, and be a part of a team. Biochemistry is the perfect choice for students who want to learn how chemical principles apply to all living systems. |
| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
To get started in any of the chemistry programs at Longwood, it is important to complete at a minimum two semesters of general chemistry. You should also plan to complete either pre-calculus or statistics, or both. If possible, it is helpful to complete organic chemistry as well but not a necessity. Finally, if you are considering the biochemistry track you should take an introductory biology sequence.

| Program Successes & Highlights | Graduates from the chemistry/biochemistry program attend graduate school, medical school, or get jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics industry, food industry and much more. Nearly every consumer product has a chemist behind it somewhere in the supply chain. Recent graduates have completed Ph.D. programs across the country. Faculty in the chemistry program maintain connections with recent graduates, creating a wide network for students who are nearing graduation. |
