Physics (BS)

Bachelor of Science
Randolph-Macon College

The department offers a program of lecture and laboratory courses to guide students on an exploration of the basic processes in their physical environment. The dynamic interplay between theory and experiment provides a key component of the intellectual life of the department's faculty and students. Through classroom and laboratory exercises and supervised research projects, students are encouraged to integrate their experience with important physical principles, to formulate well-posed problems, to produce and evaluate solutions, and to communicate their conclusions. Computers are used in several courses as tools in this chain of reasoning, to enhance the collection and analysis of experimental data and to model and display theoretical concepts. The study of physics focuses on the interrelation of complex phenomena and a critical evaluation of conclusions.

A major in physics prepares students for entry-level positions in research, development, scientific programming, technical writing, teaching, and other positions requiring technical skills. It is also appropriate for students wishing to pursue graduate study in physics; related professions, such as astrophysics, biophysics, meteorology or oceanography; or other professions, such as engineering, medicine, business, or law. A minor in physics enhances students' comprehension of technical phenomena.

In addition to offering a major and a minor in physics and engineering physics, a major in engineering, and a minor in astrophysics, the department participates in several cooperative programs. Students wishing to combine a liberal arts education with an undergraduate engineering degree should inquire about the engineering programs in cooperation with the University of Virginia. This program leads to undergraduate degrees from Randolph-Macon and either bachelor's or master's degrees from the cooperating institution. In a cooperative program with the U.S. Navy, students may spend alternate semesters at Randolph-Macon and at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, where they participate in a work-training program, for which they are remunerated.

Grades of C- or better in PHYS 151 and PHYS 152 are required for acceptance into the advanced programs described above. Physics majors participating in the cooperative engineering programs must complete the physics core and collegiate requirements with a B+ average in science and mathematics courses as well as overall.

Students interested in any of these programs are encouraged to meet as early as possible with a member of the physics department to plan their collegiate program of study: Astrophysics - Professor Rodruck; Engineering or Engineering Physics - Professor McLeskey; Physics - Professor Woolard; Physics teaching certification - Professor Dominguez; Co-op Engineering - Professor McLeskey.

Students majoring in physics are also required to participate in assessment activities administered by the department or by the college.

The department highly encourages each student to participate in research opportunities outside of their normal course work. PHYS 271-PHYS 274, the college's Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF) and the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) are some examples of programs which provide students unique research experiences. Students who successfully complete SURF, REU or other research internship programs may request research proficiency for PHYS 400 and substitute another elective course on the physics major. Review of the student's work and permission of the department is required.

Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree Physics is the most basic and fundamental science, encompassing the study of the largest galaxies to the smallest sub-atomic particles. Physics is also the basis for other sciences and an excellent foundation for any scientific or technical career. Potential employers recognize R-MC Physics majors for their analytical and problem solving skills, making them versatile and valuable in the workplace. Society of Physics Students Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honors Society Many of our majors also learn to run observing sessions at the Keeble Observatory With multiple opportunities for small group problem solving and research presentation, our majors stand out from others from larger schools as exceptional communicators and team members. They also receive personalized mentoring from our faculty members as they work through the application process for graduate school or the workforce. Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Departmental programs: our students can minor in Astrophysics, Engineering Physics, or Education for a Secondary Physics Teaching License. Other common minors or double majors are mathematics, chemistry, and computer science.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Randolph-Macon College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses Our majors engage in a yearlong advance laboratory sequence, where they learn modern laboratory techniques and use experimental apparatus such as laser, spectrometers, photomultipliers, and radioactive sources and detectors. Each major works closely with a faculty member to conduct a semester-long research project (which may be experimental, computational, or theoretical), and works in a small group during senior seminar to produce an original investigation from start to finish.
Doing More With Your Degree While in the program, students have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with a faculty member. Some examples of previous studies are Becca Sauls (Physics '23) with Dr. Rodruck: "Analysis of Low Mass Stellar Clusters Within NGC 7320", SURF Summer 2022 Jake Raugh with Dr. Cullingsworth: "Optimization Pitch Angle and the Effect of Moment of Inertia on the Efficiency of Wind Turbines," SURF Summer 2022 Huma Jafree and Bekah Polen with Dr. Dominguez and Dr. Woolard, with Greenbank Observatory: “The Rotation Curve of the Milky Way Galaxy as Evidence for Dark Matter” (Senior Research Project Resulting in a Published Peer-reviewed paper.) Eric Montag (Physics, '17) with Dr. Dominguez, “Nuclear energy after the Great East Japan Earthquake: Japanese and American perspectives”, Summer 2016 funded by SURF and the Taylor Anderson Foundation Students also have the opportunity to travel through courses such as Physics of Light, taught by Dr. Dominguez in conjunction with Psychology of Vision with Dr. Riener in the Psychology Department. Travels to Wroxton and London, England. Graduates from our program are employed with companies such as Naval Center Warfare Division Dahlgren Division Richmond Public Schools US Army Research Laboratory VSP Technologies Pinehurst Technologies, Inc. Other graduates have continued their studies in programs such as California Institute of Technology, for Physics Duke University, for Physics UCLA, for Aerospace Engineering University of Virginia, for Engineering Physics and Applied Math William and Mary, for Computer Science
Program Successes & Highlights Our history: Our Department houses the Keeble Observatory, which dates back to (at least) 1872. The Keeble offers learning experiences for students and student-led public observing sessions to the community. The study of physics (or “Natural Philosophy” as it was then called) at R-MC dates back to the same time period. We have had recent majors who are 2nd or 3rd generation R-MC Physics majors. We are proud that the percentage of women who graduate from RMC in physics is well above the national average. In 2017, women earned 21% of physics bachelors' degrees (www.AIP.org) 2017-2022, 33% of our physics graduates were women. The astrophysics minor makes the RMC unique among many of its competitors. In addition to scale and personal attention, RMC stands out for it’s flexibility for physics majors to engage our department’s other programs of Astrophysics, Engineering, or Secondary Education. Many of our incoming students have not yet decided on a major: many want to explore physics, engineering, and engineering physics. RMC students are not locked into a major and have time to explore and understand the benefits of each of our majors.
