Program Details
Bachelor of Science, Major in Physics
Bachelor of ScienceJames Madison University
Physics is the study of the laws of nature that describe the universe we see around us and the relationship of energy and matter. This includes the study of nature on every scale from the smallest subatomic particles to the evolution of the universe itself. The study of physics is more than the pursuit of basic scientific knowledge. It is the development of a way of thinking about problems whether learning what is inside a proton or how to use knowledge from biology, chemistry or geology to solve an interesting practical problem.
In this major, students will be immersed in a program that integrates a comprehensive classroom curriculum with extensive hands-on experience working in research laboratories with our faculty. Students have opportunities to work both on campus and at national and international facilities to conduct research in nuclear physics and astronomy, and use state-of-the-art equipment on campus in materials, computational physics and non-linear dynamics. To find out more about the major and what the program is like consult the Physics & Astronomy program page.
Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | The most important skill that physics majors learn is reductionist problem solving. That is, they take very complex problems and break them down into small steps that can be understood by knowing certain universal rules. This makes our graduates more flexible in their thinking than many of their colleagues and therefore greatly valued by employers. Students who do well are frequently those who enjoy solving puzzles, even very difficult ones. They are also tenacious and don't give up easily when confronted with complexity. Then there is also the importance of valuing an understanding of the natural world around us. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
The most important thing for an incoming transfer to do is make sure you have taken the math courses that are prerequisites for almost everything in the physics major. That means MATH235, MATH236, and if possible MATH237. Since these are sequential, not having any of them would mean there are at least 3 semesters to complete before you could take any of our upper level physics requirements.
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
Doing More With Your Degree | All of our majors are required to participate in undergraduate research at some point in their time here. We place great value on these experiences since they are a student's chance to be a scientist rather than just learn about science. We presently have ongoing funded research projects in nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology, materials physics, and string theory. |
Program Successes & Highlights | Our graduates have a nearly 100% employment rate when they enter the work force directly after graduation. Many also decide to go on to graduate studies in physics, engineering, or astronomy and recent graduates have been accepted to grad schools such as Princeton, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Virginia, North Carolina State, UCLA, and Harvard. |

What If I Have An Associate Degree Or Credit For Prior Learning?

Transfer Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Completion of an approved transfer associate degree will guarantee fulfillment of JMU's General Education requirements. https://www.jmu.edu/transfer/VCCStransfer/ASDegrees.shtml |
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School |
Credit for Prior Learning | JMU accepts and reviews AP, IB, CIE and CLEP for all students with eligible scores, which may be different than at your prior institution. JMU will complete an independent review of the test score to apply credit to the JMU student record. Credit for prior learning (CLEP) is awarded on a per case basis for Adult Degree (Individualized Studies Majors) and RN-BSN students only and in consultation with the department of expertise, with the exception of military service credit. Credit for learning acquired in military service is awarded by the registrar's office using the ACE guide credit recommendation for study/experience listed on the military transcript and in consultation with the department of expertise. |
