It strengthens critical thinking and analytical problem-solving skills. Combining courses from mathematics, computer science, and statistics, the data science concentration prepares students for a wide variety of jobs, not only in the tech sector but in virtually every sector.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Hollins University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree Students apply mathematics to many fields. Majors earn graduate school placements in mathematics, forensic science, medicine, and law. Hollins majors have gone into many diverse fields including: accountants; actuaries; art historians; archeologists; data scientists; defense analysts; doctors; economists; financial planners; investment analysts; programmers; quantitative analysts; and statisticians.
Program Successes & Highlights Hollins mathematic majors take a two-semester Senior Seminar where they pick a topic and research it, under the guidance of faculty mentors. Some past topics include: the Pythagorean music scales; a network analysis of the Hollins basketball team; using data science techniques to analyze financial markets; bias in facial recognition; and hidden Markov model and stock price prediction.

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Completion of a qualifying VCCS associate degree program will guarantee completion of the general education component of the Hollins undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major.

Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School Students earning an associate degree while in high school are not eligible for guaranteed admission programs and must complete general education courses. All courses are evaluated and transferred as applicable to your degree.
Credit for Prior Learning We accept AP and IB results for college credit if the score earned meets college expectations. Transfer credits will be considered for CLEP (College Level Examination Program) on an individual basis for examinations if Hollins offers a comparable course.
Did You Know That...
  • Completing your Associate transfer degree post-high school satisfies all lower division general education requirements and increases the chance of completing your bachelor's degree?
  • Exceeding 3 years or 90 credits at your community college means you may have exhausted your financial aid at that college and have limited your future financial aid at: Hollins University
