Applied Mathematics (BS)
Bachelor of ScienceRandolph-Macon College
The major in applied mathematics combines classical study of mathematics with modern computational methods and applications to other disciplines. Students pursuing the major will develop multiple modes of evidence including proof, simulation, computation, and visualization, and they will apply their skills to real-world problems in courses taught by mathematics faculty and in a chosen cross-disciplinary area.

Considerations for Selecting Degree | Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon. Do you like a challenge? Do you like thinking hard about interesting questions and finding solutions to complex problems? If so, majoring in mathematics will teach you how to be a life-long problem solver. Mathematics is the fundamental tool of the sciences and it lies at the heart of many of the real-life issues impacting society today. A training in mathematics will equip you with a powerful set of skills that will greatly enhance your ability to understand and change the world. From calculus to data analysis to critical thinking and decision-making, mathematics will teach you a range of transferable skills and techniques that you will be able to use in your future career, whether in mathematics, science, engineering, business, law, medicine, or something else entirely. But fundamentally, mathematics is fun! There is nothing like the satisfaction of cracking a really hard problem, proving a theorem, or having that amazing light-bulb moment. If these are things you enjoy, you just might be a mathematician! Pi Mu Epsilon (the national mathematics honor society) · The earnings of college graduates who have majored in a discipline that involves mathematics are 26% higher on average than those graduates with non-math-related degrees. · The number of jobs requiring mathematical skills is growing and this growth is expected to continue. So when you graduate from college, there will be more jobs available in math-related fields than when you started college. · College graduates who have majored in a discipline that involves mathematics receive higher earnings than those with non-math-related degrees. · Workers in fields that use mathematics experience lower unemployment rates than the general population. So if your child works in any career involving mathematics, they will be more likely to keep their job. |

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | Randolph-Macon mathematics faculty know all of our majors by name. We offer individualized independent study courses, in which students can work one-on-one with a professor on subjects of their interest. Students can work on research projects during the summer and present them at professional meetings. But perhaps most significantly, in addition to studying essential topics like calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra, students also have the opportunity to take courses such as game theory, Japanese mathematics, and the history of mathematics—opportunities rarely available at peer institutions. |

During their time in Japan, students visit key historical sites, view mathematical artifacts, and absorb the cultural aesthetics that still seem intimately connected with this country’s traditional geometry. This course is often run in parallel with a travel course taught by a professor from the Asian Studies Department. · Maria Cummings (Class of 2020) spent the fall semester of 2018 studying at the University of Trier in Germany. Program Successes & Highlights | The Mathematics Department maintains a computer classroom containing Apple Mac computers, equipped with useful software packages such as Mathematica, MATLAB, GAP, R, Lyx, and LaTeX. Students have 24/7 access to the Mac Lab as well as a dedicated student common room in which to study.
