Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree Our program has small class sizes and lots of personalized attention. All classes are taught by professors who want you to excel. You will have access to peer tutors, as well as professors ready to help during office hours.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

The class Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning (Math 201) is a prerequisite course for many of our upper level courses. It is designed as an introduction to logic and formal mathematical writing to help you succeed in upper level courses. It is offered every fall, and should be taken as soon as possible upon arriving at E&H.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Emory & Henry University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree

Studying mathematics trains the mind in clear and rigorous thinking. A degree in mathematics leads to high-demand jobs in many fields.

Popular careers from our math alumni:

* Teaching mathematics at K-12, community college, or university level.

* Engineering (aerospace, chemical, mechanical, acoustic, etc)

* Physicist

* Material Scientist

*Pharmacist

* Economist

* Actuary, Accounting, Finance

*Data Analysis, from sports ranking to medical research

* Statistician

*

*Double/triple major opportunities

ï‚·Mathematics pairs naturally with physics and chemistry. Many required courses count towards all three majors.

ï‚· The philosophical and atheistic aspects of pure mathematics have attracted some of our students to double major in philosophy, art, religion, or music.

ï‚· Neuroscience continues to reveal connections between the study of mathematics and foreign languages, which explains why double majoring in math and foreign language has been a choice for many students.

ï‚· Joint degrees in math and economics have increased since a decade ago and have been proved an excellent combination for career opportunities as analysts in the government or private sectors.

Program Successes & Highlights

The Emory & Henry Math Club is an organization geared toward letting students and faculty explore mathematics that is not typically taught in the classroom. The meetings provide a relaxed environment in which you get to collaborate with others to solve interesting questions. Besides doing math, the math club also aims to provide critical information about what one can do with a math major. This includes discussions about jobs in industry and education as well as graduate school. If you are interesting in any of these topics, the math club is right for you!

If you are interested in digging deeper into mathematics beyond a standard curriculum, then you may also be interested in an undergraduate research opportunities. You can get connected with a math faculty member to learn what research in mathematics looks like and then explore topics that no one has ever explored. The benefits of undergraduate research include: experience in doing original research (which is important for those wanting to pursue graduate school), publishing papers, and presenting at conferences. All of these outcomes are great for your resume! Recent topics have been studying Egyptian Fractions (how Egyptians used fractions 5000 years ago), modelling native salamander habitats, and studying the racial bias in minor league baseball salaries.

Emory & Henry Math department has a 3D printing lab with cutting edge technology. You can use the printers both in and outside of class. We have opportunities for interested students to be supplemental instructors and tutors.

What If I Have An Associate Degree Or Credit For Prior Learning?
Expand or Shrink Accordion
Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Completion of the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program will guarantee completion of the 'Think, Understand & Create' liberal arts core component of the E&H undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major. Other elements of the core curriculum may need to be met if not taken as part of the AA/AS degree. Students will be required to complete CORE 200 and CORE 300 at E&H. Students completing at least 56 credits following high school graduation but before transferring to E&H are exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, and Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship.

Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School Only students who have completed college credit elsewhere following high school graduation will be exempt from the Core Curriculum requirement. Completion of courses that satisfy elements of the Care & Cultural Competency and Think, Understand & Create elements of the curriculum will be awarded equivalent credit with an earned grade of C or better. Students completing the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program concurrently with their high school diploma will not be exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, or Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship.
Credit for Prior Learning Emory & Henry awards credit for AP, IB, and CLEP. Please see the credit equivalency charts to determine the needed scores for course credit. Currently, we do not award academic credit for industry or military training.
Did You Know That...
  • Completing your Associate transfer degree post-high school satisfies all lower division general education requirements and increases the chance of completing your bachelor's degree?
  • Exceeding 3 years or 90 credits at your community college means you may have exhausted your financial aid at that college and have limited your future financial aid at: Emory & Henry University
