The B.S. in Mathematics is designed to offer students analytical reasoning, applied mathematics knowledge and problem solving skills. The degree requirements complement additional coursework in computer science, data science, cyber security, statistics, or another natural science. Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to enter a graduate program or seek employment in industry or research.

Program Guidance Element	What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree	Many of the classes in the math degree focus on logic and critical thinking. While we do cover many applied courses, like multivariable calculus, differential equations, and numerical analysis, our upper level courses focus almost entirely on proof work and abstract ideas.
Considerations When Selecting Courses	Most math majors come in either with calculus credit or starting at calculus. A student can major in math, start at precalc or college algebra, and still graduate in 4 years. However, it will require some additional classes being taken in the sophomore and junior year. Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year Connect with an advisor at your community college and Shenandoah University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses	Seniors must complete a capstone research project. One of the requirements is to present at a local math conference. We normally rent a van and travel to the university hosting the conference, but a situation may arise where a student must get transportation to the conference.
Doing More With Your Degree	Our program ties in closely with the Data Science and Applied Mathematics program and Computer Science. Many of our students double major with either of these programs. Our program also can prepare you to move onto graduate school for mathematics or applied math. Additionally, there are many paid undergraduate research opportunities in the field of math that students can complete over the summer.
Program Successes & Highlights	In the last two years we have had 5 math seniors apply to graduate school and everyone was accepted. We have also had 2 out 3 students who applied to REU opportunities get accepted, and we have had at least one of our senior's research projects place 3rd or higher at our local math conference.

Associate Transfer Degree Completion	Completion of an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Arts and Science will guarantee completion of general education requirements.
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School	Completion of an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Arts and Science prior to high school graduation will guarantee completion of general education requirements with the exception that the First Year Seminar (3 credits) must be completed upon enrollment to SU.
