Southwest Virginia Community College
The Associate of Science in Business degree, specializing in Outdoor Leadership is a transferrable degree providing a great start on your career path to the tourism and recreation industry. Virginia's outdoor recreation and tourism industry already employs nearly 150,000 people, and the job numbers are growing. In the outdoor leadership program, you'll get a thorough introduction to the tourism and recreation industry. The program includes general business courses related to economics, communications, and risk management. You'll also take specialized courses in outdoor leadership, covering topics such as recreation and leisure, parks, land use, Leadership and supervision, physical education and wilderness adventure planning.
Outcomes
In addition to general education transfer credits, the program focuses on: • State a philosophy of recreation, use of natural resources and impact recreation activities have on the natural resources and watershed. • Prepare for a wilderness excursion for both planned and unplanned experiences. • Design, implement and present interpretative programs in a variety of formats and audiences. • Protect the outdoor environment when implementing outdoor programming by following principles of leave no trace. • Provide leadership for tourism and recreation related projects and events. • Design and implement outdoor recreation programming for specific target audiences • Demonstrate knowledge of outdoor recreational skills and activities.
