The History BA at George Mason University offers students a broad education in historical study and research, but is particularly innovative in the study of public and digital histories. The major is highly flexible and encourages students to pursue their interests through internships, a variety of coursework, and opportunities to focus on different places and periods in history. Led by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, students will learn how to make use of digital media to preserve and present the past in new ways. Taking advantage of the proximity to key historical sites in northern Virginia and the DC area, students are encouraged to study public history and take part in internships for course credit. The flexibility of our program allows students to incorporate other experiences into their degrees such as study abroad and independent research with faculty members.

Students interested in Mason are encouraged to focus on completing courses that meet general education requirements. BA degree programs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences have additional requirements in: philosophy or religion, social and behavioral science, foreign language through the intermediate level, and non-western culture. For the Bachelor of Arts in History, students must receive 120 total credits, including 36 credits in history. All history majors must take courses in U.S., European, and non-western history, as well as methods and research courses: HIST 300 and HIST 499.

George Mason University offers a Bachelor of Arts in history, as well as concentrations in public history, digital history, global history, and US history. Students can also pursue an accelerated masters in history.

All students will take two historical methods courses at George Mason: HIST 300 and HIST 499. These courses provide students with an opportunity to engage in in-depth historical research and writing. While most students choose to pursue a BA in history without a concentration, those with more distinct interests can choose to concentrate in digital history, public history, global history, US history, or develop an individualized concentration.

A minor is easy to accommodate in the history BA degree plan. Some history students choose to pursue a minor in American government and others are interested in the pre-law program at Mason. History students interested in an accelerated masters in history can do so within our department; those who are dedicated to teaching at the secondary-school level can work toward an accelerated masters in secondary education offered through the education department. Those who excel academically are encouraged to apply to the honors in history program, which offers students a chance to work closely with a professor on an independent research project.

History majors graduates have pursued careers in government, law, and management, as well as teaching and graduate study. A number of our graduates have focused on public history as their career choice, working with museums, archives, historic sites, and the National Park Service. Other graduates have pursued positions teaching history at the secondary school level.
