Program Details
Anthropology, BA
Bachelor of ArtsGeorge Mason University
Anthropology is the study of human beings and their cultures. Majors develop an eye for detail and careful observation, critical thinking, sensitivity to the unfamiliar, skills in research and writing, and an ability to describe and understand culture. The programs in archaeology and biological anthropology give hands-on research experience with faculty through fieldwork in bioarchaeology, archaeology, and museum-based data collection. The programs in cultural anthropology connect anthropological research to current social challenges such as health and disease, urbanization, and geopolitics. It is a strong undergraduate major that provides sound interdisciplinary preparation for a variety of careers.
Program Overview & Guidance

| Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
|---|---|
| Considerations for Selecting Degree | The Anthropology, BA at GMU is an on campus in-person degree program. We take a holistic approach to understanding the many different aspects of the human experience. As such, students will take an introductory class and upper-level class in each of the 3 sub-disciplines: cultural, archaeology, and biological anthropology. With the elective credits allotted in the major, you may choose to focus more specific in one of these areas or you can choose a blend of what interests you. |

|
| Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
| Doing More With Your Degree | Anthropology majors can expect to participate in study abroad programs, serve as research assistants or participate in field schools. Thinking about an advanced degree? Consider our bachelors accelerated master's program (BAM). For high achieving students, take up to 6 graduate level courses while finishing your bachelors and pay the undergraduate tuition rate. |
| Program Successes & Highlights | The anthropology program at George Mason University is a unique setting for students to explore the human condition in the past and present. Our award-winning faculty bring cutting-edge research from around the world into our classrooms. We work on contributing solutions to some of the most pressing human problems facing us today. Anthropology at Mason has many unique strengths from our location just outside of Washington, D.C. to our internationally renowned professors, a highly diverse student body, and a sincere investment placed in our students as individuals. Our courses include evening and online classes covering many topics: urbanism, transnationalism, medical anthropology, racism, immigration, bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, human genomics, violence and warfare, environmental archaeology, zooarchaeology, human evolution, and study abroad programs in Italy and Peru. Beyond the classroom, our undergraduate students find unequalled opportunities for mentorships, internships, and fieldwork from the halls of Congress to the study of human origins and archaeological digs in South America. Anthropology is versatile. Our graduates enjoy high rates of full-time employment. The skills they develop open an unusually wide range of employment possibilities. Past graduates have applied their degrees working as teachers, legal assistants, U.S. Park Service rangers, medical, federal and private researchers, analysts, and policy consultants, medicolegal work, health care providers, and more. Others pursue graduate degrees. However anthropology may shape a student's path, at Mason, it opens doors to a global range of possibilities. |
