Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts

Associate of Arts
J Sargeant Reynolds Community College

This degree is for those who want to transfer to a 4 year college to prepare for a career in broad study fields that demand thinking on many levels, reading, writing, and those that involve any of the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Majors must take two years of a foreign language.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the AA degree in Liberal Arts, the student will be able to demonstrate: An interdisciplinary understanding of the human experience from different global, cultural, sociological, and historical perspectives; An awareness of how social and cultural contexts shape and influence forms of human expression; and An understanding of the interdependence of academic disciplines and how an interdisciplinary perspective contributes to understanding the human experience.

Considerations for Selecting Degree The Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts is intended as a transfer degree focused on developing and sharpening students’ critical thinking skills. Students learn about reasoning from variety of disciplinary perspectives, while completing general education requirements for transfer to a university. Most classes are available online, and in-person.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Begin with world language 101 in the first semester.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and J Sargeant Reynolds Community College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses Requires 12 credits in a modern world language.
Doing More With Your Degree The Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts prepares students for university study and careers that demand problem solving, and critical and/or creative thinking. The Liberal Arts AA is a particularly good choice for students who wish to become leaders in their careers by teaching them to understand diverse experiences, and different ways of thinking.
Program Successes & Highlights This is a transfer oriented program that will help a student develop the critical thinking, and leadership skills that valued in the professional workforce.
