Political Science (BA)

Bachelor of Arts
Randolph-Macon College

Political science in the broadest sense is the study of the institutions of power in society. The political science department strives to impart to its students knowledge and understanding of these institutions of power, the habits and skills of lifelong learning in our discipline, the ability to develop tools to interpret political activity in later life, and an appreciation of the responsibilities of citizenship in our democracy. The knowledge, tools, and skills learned in the department's courses are also intended to give students a strong foundation for graduate study in political science, public administration, law, or other disciplines and to prepare them for professional careers in public service, politics, interest group representation, business, journalism, teaching, and other professions.

Considerations for Selecting Degree The department's courses give students a strong foundation for careers in law, public administration, election campaigns, and other professions especially in public service. Being close to both Richmond and Washington gives our students the opportunity for many exciting internships in state and national government which can lead to employment opportunities right after graduation. The department supports several student groups, such as Pi Sigma Alpha (the honors society for political science), Virginia21 ('empowers college students and young Virginians to be engaged citizens and advocates for issues important to them and Virginia's future'), the Pre-Law Society, and when active the Young Democrats and College Republicans. Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Environmental Studies, International Studies, Communication Studies

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Randolph-Macon College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses A Randolph-Macon intern in January has a unique opportunity to be a full-time (unpaid, typically) employee without having to schedule the internship around campus courses, as is the case for other area universities. Our interns serving during the General Assembly session in Richmond may be one of only two or three assistants to the legislator or to a lobbying organization and are given significant responsibilities. DC-based interns can work on Capital Hill, for lobbying firms, or in executive branch agencies. Our interns learn to engage with constituents, lobbyists, other legislators, and learn valuable skills in event planning, legislative tracking, and all types of political communication.
Doing More With Your Degree While in the program, students have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with a faculty member. These collaborations have led to recent 'best paper' awards for presentations at academic conferences. Often these research efforts are sponsored through the Shapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, which has even supported international research for qualified students. The department's Research Methods class prepares students for these research opportunities and for graduate study later. Our graduates often report they were better prepared than their peers in graduate school to begin to conduct research, or as law students to understand statistical data often used in legal documents.
Program Successes & Highlights In fall 2022, the department reviewed student outcomes for our major graduates 2018-2022. We had information on 84 of the 102 graduates over those five years. 82 of the 84 were either employed or pursuing post-graduate studies. 34 of our recent graduates have gone on to post-graduate studies, 19 of whom have gone to law school. 20 recent graduates are working directly in politics as staffers to elected officials at both the state and national level, in governement agencies, in government relations work (lobbying), and with federal contractors. 18 gradutes were in the private sector, working in the financial sector, as lawyers or in law firms, military, media, and education.

Expand or Shrink Accordion
Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Students admitted under our guaranteed admissions agreement are guaranteed completion of most general education requirements. Students may need to complete additional foreign language coursework to complete the Effective Communication requirements and must complete the college's Cross-Area Requirements, most of which can be fulfilled through major programs and should not significantly increase the time to completion of degree.

Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School
Credit for Prior Learning We accept AP (4 or 5 on the exam) and IB (5, 6, or 7 on higher level exams).
Did You Know That...
  • Completing your Associate transfer degree post-high school satisfies all lower division general education requirements and increases the chance of completing your bachelor's degree?
  • Exceeding 3 years or 90 credits at your community college means you may have exhausted your financial aid at that college and have limited your future financial aid at: Randolph-Macon College
