Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | Emory & Henry history classes are distinctive because history is taught in a comparative, analytical way. Students do more than memorize a series of dates and events--they learn to see patterns and relationships in events of the past and the implications those events have for the present. Another distinctive aspect of the Emory & Henry history program is an emphasis on student participation. Our classes are taught by professors (not graduate students), and they are typically very small--usually 10 to 20 students--and in virtually every class there is a great deal of discussion. Students also pursue original research, make oral presentations, and write papers that in some instances are read at professional meetings. The history curriculum has recently expanded to include studies in such areas as Archaeology and Prehistory, Atlantic History, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Islamic histories. We even offer a class on the life of Frederick Douglass. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Students should try and take History 205 by the end of their second year. History 305 should be taken not later than the third year. A 400-level capstone course is required for graduation. This can be a seminar, an independent study, an internship, or a senior thesis.
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
Doing More With Your Degree | At Emory & Henry, students encounter history through projects ranging from internships and research papers to hands-on work with a large collection of Cherokee and Mississippian artifacts. Students travel to the Martin Luther King Center in Atlanta or the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., and gather oral histories from throughout the Virginia Highlands for the Appalachian Oral History Project. Some students study in England, Spain, France, Italy, China, and Brazil. Internships and directed studies are available locally, regionally, and nationally. Emory & Henry students have participated at internships at such places as Harpers Ferry National Park, the Library of Virginia, the National Archives, and the Library of Congress. Our fastest growing sector of job opportunities is in public history. More traditional careers in the ministry, legal professions, public school education, and private sector business remain well traveled by our graduates. |
Program Successes & Highlights | Emory & Henry history professors believe that we should help each of our students moving from undergraduate studies to a career or advanced study. We help students find jobs and internships and help them in their preparations for advanced study. The success of our graduates reflects the strength of Emory & Henry's history program. Our record of success in placing students in jobs or graduate school is among the best records of all Virginia colleges and universities. |
