Sociology, BA
Bachelor of ArtsGeorge Mason University
Sociology involves the systematic study of social structures, cultural patterns, and human relationships. It combines rigorous methods with theory and observation, yielding insights that challenge commonly held assumptions about the social world. Sociology also informs the practice of social and public service, aiding efforts to address important social problems. Sociology majors pursue a varied set of career paths, ranging from teaching, human service and human resource occupations, to positions in the criminal justice system, marketing, and social research. The major is excellent preparation for students considering law school or graduate training in the social and behavioral sciences.
Outcomes
1. Apply a sociological imagination to understand and explain the connections between the lives of individuals and the historical and cultural periods in which they live. 2. Identify the historical and contemporary theories and empirical methods that are the basis of sociological knowledge. 3. Develop an understanding of social problems related to inequality, racism, and sexism. Use this knowledge to move toward a just society. 4. Conduct original research by identifying a social problem and formulating a research question, compiling and summarizing existing research, designing a research strategy choosing from qualitative and quantitative approaches, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting findings to both sociological and professional audiences. 5. Identify the processes through which individuals and groups mobilize to change society by examining and analyzing historical and contemporary social movements. Based on this knowledge create strategies for individual social action. 6. Write clearly and logically, communicate effectively with others from different cultures, and prepare professional presentations for diverse audiences. 7.
