The objective of the sociology major is to prepare students for occupations in business, industry, government, and human service. The major is appropriate preparation for graduate study in the social sciences and law. The focus of sociology is on social forces, institutions, organizations, and how individuals interface with society. The student's personal growth can be achieved through understanding of the rich diversity of the modern world. Skills can be developed in oral and written communication, critical thinking, scientific research methods, statistics and computerized data analysis. The Family Studies concentration within the sociology major is designed to prepare students to serve with and for families across communities by offering preventative programs and identifying resources to promote healthy, resilient families. The Family Studies concentration is designated by the National Council on Family Relations as a Certified Family Life Educator curriculum. This distinction allows students who complete the program an abbreviated path to becoming Certified Family Life Educators and gives them a competitive edge in pursuing careers working with families.

| Considerations for Selecting Degree | Students who are interested in family dynamics and want to prevent and address family problems will enjoy studying family science. Family scientists work to strengthen interpersonal relationships within all types of families through prevention, evidence-based practice, education, and collaboration. In addition to a strong foundation in sociological concepts, theory, and research, students in this curriculum gain an in-depth understanding of families across cultures and throughout the lifespan. The major requirements can be fulfilled in 2 years. Most major courses are taught in-person only, but some courses are occasionally offered online during winter intersession or summer. |
| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
If you earn a transfer-oriented associates degree (Associate of Arts and/or Science degree) from one of the Virginia community colleges or Richard Bland College and you are admitted to Longwood, you are guaranteed completion of all Foundation-level courses as well as the Integrating World Languages Perspectives-level course associated with Civitae (Longwood’s core curriculum program). If you have completed sociology courses at your previous institution with a “C” or better, you may transfer those classes as Sociology Major Requirements. You do not have to have taken a sociology class at your previous institution to declare a sociology major at Longwood.

| Doing More With Your Degree | Students in this degree program get practical experience applying what they learn through course projects in the local community, opportunities to do research with faculty, and through an internship. Many courses count for both Sociology and Criminal Justices Studies, making obtaining a double major in Sociology and Criminal Justices Studies possible in just two years. Minors that pair well with the sociology major are Anthropology, Psychology, Political Science, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Race and Ethnic Studies. |
| Program Successes & Highlights | Recent graduates have begun working in a variety of career fields including: child protective services, victim advocacy, human resources, park ranger, paralegal, higher education student affairs, nursing education, and family life counseling. Other graduates have continued their education pursuing graduate degrees in mental health counseling, urban planning, sociology, public policy, social work, and law school. |

| Is This College Right For Me? | Longwood is a mid-sized university where students enjoy the highest percentage of classes taught by full-time professors in Virginia and a residential academic community that offers students the full university experience. Class sizes are smaller than average--our Civitae Core Curriculum classes are capped at 25 students--throughout our more than 100 majors, minors, and concentrations. With seven on-campus residence halls and two university-managed apartment complexes, students live, learn, and grow together in a true community. Opportunities for students to be involved are the hallmark of the Longwood experience. From service organizations and Greek life to club sports and a long list of clubs based on interests and activities, there is something for everyone at Longwood.
