Program Details
Sociology/Anthropology (BA)
Bachelor of ArtsRandolph-Macon College
Sociology and anthropology involve the systematic study of social life and culture in order to understand the causes and consequences of human behavior. Sociologists and anthropologists study the structure and processes of nonindustrialized and industrialized societies in the United States and around the world. They examine how culture, social structures (groups, organizations, and communities) and social institutions (family, education, religion, etc.) affect human attitudes, actions, and life-chances. Sociology and anthropology combine scientific and humanistic perspectives.
Drawing upon various theoretical perspectives, sociologists and anthropologists study such areas as culture, socialization, crime, deviance, inequality, health and illness, family patterns, law, social change and race, and ethnic relations. Combining theoretical perspectives with empirical research allows students an opportunity to develop new insights into their own lives as well as the forces that shape everyday life in society.
The sociology/anthropology curriculum prepares the student for both academic and applied research careers. It offers an essential liberal arts background for many careers and professions, including public service and administration, communications and public relations, law, business, medicine, journalism, arts management, environmental science, and other professions. The department offers both a major and minor in sociology and anthropology. Our faculty are also centrally involved in the Colleges programs in Black Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, Environmental Studies, and International Studies. Most courses count for one or more of the C21 requirements.
The theoretical and methodological courses in the curriculum provide intensive instruction in the application of sociological and anthropological theory and methodology. The theoretical courses provide an intensive examination of the various sociological and anthropological perspectives on human social behavior and on the social systems we create. They evaluate the different ways these perspectives gather and use evidence to make inference about the world in which we live. The department also offers extensive instruction and experience in research design and methodology including courses in quantitative research methods, qualitative and survey methodologies, social statistics, and computer approaches in social research.
The department offers many other opportunities for interested students to engage in research and practice outside of the classroom. The field study and internship programs provide opportunities for application of the theoretical and methodological principles learned in the classroom. These programs encourage students to explore careers that may interest them and gain valuable experience toward employment after college.
The grade point average for coursework comprising the major or minor, must be no less than 2.00 with no course grade below C-.
Program Overview & Guidance

---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | The Sociology-Anthropology Program at R-MC offers a unique blend of sociology, anthropology, and criminology courses. Students gain knowledge in all three areas and boost their competitive edge. The curriculum includes opportunities for collaborative work in student-centered classrooms where students engage in the scientific study of social and cultural institutions and social inequality. Upper-level students learn to conduct original research through which they sharpen their critical thinking and communication skills. Qualified students can join AKD (International Sociology Honors Society) and many of our students participate in campus clubs and organizations such as the Interfaith Council and Criminology Club. Transferable skills include research design, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, SPSS, and critical thinking. Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Students are able to complete the required courses in two years. It is helpful to take statistics, and/or introductory level sociology courses prior to beginning the program.
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | The sociology-anthropology program offers a unique combination of sociology and anthropology courses. Faculty utilize a hands-on approach to learning. Faculty use simulation games, assign research projects, and facilitate applied practice exercises. A service learning component is attached to some courses, allowing students to volunteer with local organizations. |
Doing More With Your Degree | Students with sociology-anthropology degrees are prepared for a wide variety of graduate programs and careers. Graduates from our program are employed in social science research, social work, marketing, policing, health care administration, and education. Recent graudates have worked with companies such as Memorial Regional Hospital, Assisting Families of Inmates (AFOI), Family Focus, Inc., and Due East Partners. Other graduates have continued their studies in programs such as VCU School of Social Work, Yale School of Nursing, 4Cities Master in Urban Studies, Campbell Law School, and the University of Richmond Law School. |
Program Successes & Highlights | While in the program, students have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with a faculty member, and many have gone on to publish this work. For example, Amaya Boswell (21') published “Pandemic Eugenics,†a book chapter co-written with Nazneen Khan (faculty) and published in COVID-19 and Childhood Inequality (2022, Routledge). Students also have the opportunity to travel abroad to places such as South Africa and the Netherlands. Our stellar award-winning faculty are engaged in current research, present at conferences, and publish in many leading journals in the field. |
