Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |

Considerations for Selecting Degree | Sociology courses offer lots of opportunities to investigate and discuss some of the pressing issues we are facing in today's world. One of our goals as a department is to meet each student where they are and provide opportunities for learning and growth over time. Students are expected to be engaged with their faculty and peers throughout their major. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
When selecting courses, you want to make sure that you are taking the foundational courses that you need as early as you can. These courses include: SOCI 101 and 102 as well as your Statistics course (chosen from several statistics class options) and SOSS 200. These four foundational courses will give you the necessary background to be successful in other, more advanced courses in the sociology program and are required for all of our majors. Some of our mid-level and upper division courses are only offered every other year, so be sure to talk to your advisor about the timing for other required courses.

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
Doing More With Your Degree | Sociology is a very versatile major, with graduates going into many fields after graduation. The Health & Human Services track offers a strong background for students wishing to work in the human services or health fields after graduation. The Health & Human Services designation qualifies our graduates to work as qualified mental health practitioners. Our department offers opportunities for strong mentorship and network-building. Some of our graduates go on to wonderful graduate programs and others enter into their professional careers immediately after graduation. Your faculty advisors will work with you throughout your undergraduate program to help you position yourself to get where you want to go. |
Program Successes & Highlights | The Department of Sociology works closely with the SOSS - Data Analysis concentration which offers students the necessary research background to be highly competitive for entering graduate school or the workforce. Our program is one of the most rigorous sociology undergraduate programs throughout our region, but our focus is on meeting students where they are to support their growth and learning. We are leaders in DEIB initiatives, working to ensure that our majors experience an equitable educational environment with opportunities to create change in the world around them. |
