The History Program offers a B.A. Degree in History as well as concentrations in Pre-Law, Public History, and Teacher Preparation in History and Social Science. A Minor in History is also available.

| Considerations for Selecting Degree | We are a text-driven discipline: reading them, analyzing them, writing them. But we are open to other "texts" as well: physical artifacts, material culture, visual records (like paintings or photos). Many of our classes require major written assignments in the course of a semester. The heart of what we do--and what makes it practical as well as academic--involves taking large amounts of information on new topics, evaluating it to separate the key facts from the not-so-vital, discerning what tips the balance vs. what is merely eye-catching, and distilling it all into a presentable (and persuasive!) format that links argument to evidence and story. |
| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
We recommend students to take survey sections early: US History in both halves, World History in both halves, or Western Civ (or something parallel to match our Historical Inquiry classes). As a transfer student, check with us about how fast we can get you into our required courses (like the Intro to the Major and Historical Methods). Usually, our 300-level courses are open to transfer students to give you more specialized study and flexible scheduling.

| Doing More With Your Degree | Besides a generalized approach to US, Western, and Non-Western fields of history, we also offer concentrations in Public History, Pre-Law, and Teacher Prep. Typically in their senior year (or nearly so), our majors do an internship, often with a local museum, gallery, historical site or battlefield, or a local government office so as to apply their learning to real-world experiences. We stress (and strive to ensure) that students are doing genuine historical work, and not being used as glorified filing clerks--even if paperwork is a key part of such jobs! We pair well with multiple other disciplines, and many students opt for double-majors such as political science, archaeology, anthropology, etc. In addition, many students combine History with minors like Homeland Security, Leadership Studies, and Philosophy. |
| Program Successes & Highlights | A history degree prepares a student for multiple opportunities, and our graduates keep proving this true: some go on to graduate work (recent degrees earned in Virginia, Louisiana, Scotland, and Ireland), others in related fields like Museum Studies, Law, Library Science, Archive Management, and Military Science. The success and pride of our graduates was shown in the most recent Longwood Day of Giving, where our department was the top-performing academic discipline across the university. Other alumni regularly volunteer their time, returning to campus to show current majors what future career doors are out there for them to open. Our students also get to display their scholarship. Some projects are born in classes, others in individually guided research with a professor, still others via their internships. Besides taking top honors at Longwood's campus-wide Research Day, they have also presented at the Undergraduate Medieval Conference, as well as both regional and national conferences of Phi Alpha Theta, the History Honor Society. |

| Is This College Right For Me? | Longwood is a mid-sized university where students enjoy the highest percentage of classes taught by full-time professors in Virginia and a residential academic community that offers students the full university experience. Class sizes are smaller than average--our Civitae Core Curriculum classes are capped at 25 students--throughout our more than 100 majors, minors, and concentrations. With seven on-campus residence halls and two university-managed apartment complexes, students live, learn, and grow together in a true community. Opportunities for students to be involved are the hallmark of the Longwood experience. From service organizations and Greek life to club sports and a long list of clubs based on interests and activities, there is something for everyone at Longwood. Each semester, an involvement fair helps students find organizations that are the right fit for them to make their time at Longwood even more meaningful. |
