Economics (BA)
Bachelor of ArtsRandolph-Macon College
Economics is the study of scarcity, choice, and tradeoffs. Scarcity exists because productive resources are limited but human wants are unlimited. As a result, all societies, households, and firms must make choices and these choices inevitably involve tradeoffs. The major in economics develops the essential skills for understanding economic problems in many contexts. It prepares students for careers in all business environments and provides an excellent foundation for graduate studies in economics, business, public policy, and law. All courses in the major and minor must be completed with a grade of C- or better.

Considerations for Selecting Degree | The major in economics develops the essential skills for understanding economic problems in many contexts. It prepares students for careers in all business environments and provides an excellent foundation for graduate studies in economics, business, public policy, and law. Omicron Delta Epsilon (International Honor Society in Economics) Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Business, Accounting, Mathematics, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Engineering

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | Internships are our most important experiential learning opportunities. Students have the opportunity to learn about being in the workplace and they learn a great deal about themselves. Students have an opportunity to realize that some of the things they learn in the classroom actually do prepare them for the working world. One of the best results is that they gain confidence that they belong, i.e., that they can make valuable contributions to an organization. Research opportunities provide excellent experiences for students. Again, they gain the confidence that they can apply the tools they acquire in other classes to studying interesting problems. In addition to research classes, students conduct research projects in the context of several 'regular' courses. In ECON 312: Econometrics, students conduct semester-long group statistical research projects. In ECON 440: Contemporary Issues students explore economic principals across different current platforms. |
Doing More With Your Degree | While in the program, students have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with a faculty member. Some examples of previous studies are: Hannah Mercer (2019), Senior Project in Economics, 'The Neglected Gender Dimension of Brain Drain,' supervised by Prof. Steve Lang, Tyler Dunn (2022), individual research course on 'Competitive Balance in Pro Sports During the COVID Seasons,' supervised by Prof. Steve Lang, Melissa Pritchard (2019), SURF project, 'The Quantitative Relationship between Maternal Education and Child Nutrition in Pakistan,' supervised by Prof. Melanie Fennell, Luna Tran (2017), SURF project, 'The Acceptance of the Vulnerable: Explaining the Employment Situation and Poverty of People with Disabilities in Cambodia,' supervised by Prof. Melanie Fennell Students also have the opportunity to travel through courses such as: ECON 383: Britain in the International Economy Graduates from our program are employed with companies such as: Melissa Pritchard (2020) is working as an analyst with Virginia Economic Development Partnership in Richmond, Chance Robinson (2018) is working for the International Economic Development Council as an Economic Development Associate, Tyler Dunn (2021) is an Associate Wealth Management Advisor for PB Mares Wealth Management LLC in Richmond, Kendall Benner (2022) is a Financial Planning Associate at Concentric Wealth Partners in Richmond, and Bre Lockhart (2020) is a Senior Sales Development Representative at ChannelAdvisor in Raleigh, NC.
