Majors in history seeking an endorsement for History and Social Science secondary education in Virginia should be thoroughly familiar with the professional education requirements for entry into and completion of the Teacher Preparation program listed elsewhere in this catalog. Concentrators must complete coursework in history, political science, geography, economics, psychology, sociology, and education. To qualify for HIST 382 - Practicum in Teaching History and the Social Sciences in the Secondary School, concentrators must complete both halves of world history and both halves of the US history survey courses, and either HIST 150 - Historical Inquiry I or HIST 151 - Historical Inquiry II with no less than a grade of C in each course. Concentrators will take HIST 300 - Teaching History and the Social Sciences in the Secondary School in the spring semester before the year they will complete student teaching. Additionally, they must complete all coursework requirements and pass the required assessments for state licensure (Virginia Communication Literacy Assessment and Praxix II; Social Studies Content Knowledge) before they may proceed to student teaching (HIST 482 - Directed Teaching of Social Studies in the Secondary School).

It also entails preparing and delivering oral presentations. There are four field experiences, three of which require the ability to drive to the schools in which students will complete their teaching assignments. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
For the History and Social Science Secondary Education concentration, complete the survey sequences for US History and World History. I also recommend taking as many of the following courses as you are able to fit into your schedule: microeconomics, introductory courses in geography, political science, psychology, and sociology. To further ease your transition into the teacher preparation program, I recommend completing the introductory courses in education - Introduction to the Teaching Profession and Human Growth and Development - and the Virginia Communication Literacy Assessment (VCLA).

Doing More With Your Degree | This concentration within the history major requires four courses of political science, and so it is very possible to add a minor in that field by taking two additional political science courses. A minor in geography is also possible to achieve with careful scheduling. |
Program Successes & Highlights | Students in this program benefit from our variety of teaching experiences and field placements that build the content knowledge and pedagogical skills necessary to work effectively with groups of diverse learners. Historically, graduates from Longwood are highly qualified and much sought after on the job market. We have an excellent job placement record in the history and social science secondary ed. teacher prep program. Our recent graduates work in school systems across the state and even in Alaska. |

Students who are admitted prior to earning the transfer-oriented associate's degree (Associate of Arts and/or Science) and complete the degree before enrolling at Longwood also will receive the articulation benefits upon submission of an official transcript. |
