The Geography program empowers, inspires and motivates students to become competent critical thinkers prepared for life-long learning. Students will be able to respond to intellectual challenges with interest, excitement and competence and see themselves as global citizen actively involved in the world around them.
By graduating with a degree in geography students will be confident in their abilities as a geographer, prepared for a lifetime of learning in geography and have the skills to make a professional contribution to the field. Students will be able to compete successfully in the job market, pursue a graduate degree and be highly qualified for a career in research and development—equipped for long term success as a professional in the field of geography.

| Considerations for Selecting Degree | Geography at JMU is a vibrant community of students and professors who join together to learn, solve problems, and make a difference in the world. Our program offers a unique, holistic approach: the geological perspective Geography is a bridge between the social sciences (human geography) and the natural sciences (physical geography). More than this, geography trains students in the latest geospatial technologies – geographic information systems (GIS), earth observation, and other cutting-edge tools – to analyze global change. Students who graduate from the program find employment in many fields including geospatial intelligence, environmental consulting, urban planning, and international affairs. |
| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Consider taking courses equivalent to JMU’s GEOG 200 – Geography: The Global Dimension , GEOG 210 – Physical Geography, GEOG 215 – Introduction to Geographic Information Science and Cartography, GEOG 216 – Earth Observation and GPS, and GEOG 280 – Human Geography: The Cultural Landscape. If you have the opportunity, take a statistics course equivalent to JMU’s MATH 220 or ISAT 251.

| Doing More With Your Degree | Geography is a 46 credit-hour major, which means it can be easily paired with a second major or minor. Our program offers three unique concentrations. The Applied Geographic Information Science (AGIS) concentration emphasizes the use of tools such as digital mapping, satellite imagery, and satellite navigation to solve problems. The Environmental Conservation, Sustainability, and Development (ECSD) concentration emphasizes the physical world, the interaction of humans with the environment and each other, and ways to address issues that arise because of these interactions. The Custom concentration allows the student flexibility to design their own curriculum in consultation with a Geography faculty member. Students can purse more than one concentration or combine their Geography major with other majors and minors. In addition, a Geography minor is available to students from outside the discipline. Students are encouraged to participate in internship and study abroad opportunities and receive credit for professional internships and international learning. Students intern with local and national businesses and organizations and have studied in London, Costa Rica, Kenya, and Malta. Through a collaboration with the Geography and Intelligence Analysis programs, students interested in geospatial intelligence can become certified with the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation. |

| Credit for Prior Learning | JMU accepts and reviews AP, IB, CIE and CLEP for all students with eligible scores, which may be different than at your prior institution. JMU will complete an independent review of the test score to apply credit to the JMU student record. Credit for prior learning (CLEP) is awarded on a per case basis for Adult Degree (Individualized Studies Majors) and RN-BSN students only and in consultation with the department of expertise, with the exception of military service credit. Credit for learning acquired in military service is awarded by the registrar's office using the ACE guide credit recommendation for study/experience listed on the military transcript and in consultation with the department of expertise. |
