BA in International Studies
Bachelor of ArtsHollins University
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program in International Studies is an interdisciplinary program combining courses in the social sciences and the humanities. Studies focus on the evolution of cultural, aesthetic, political, economic, and diplomatic relations among nations and peoples. In order to fulfill the major requirements, students must spend at least a semester studying abroad, take a foreign language beyond the intermediate level, and write a senior thesis on a topic with an international focus.
Outcomes
SLO 1: Students graduating from the international studies program will be able to recognize, understand and apply critical concepts in International Relations, Geopolitics, and Global Economic Systems. SLO 2: Students graduating from the International Studies program will be able to integrate scholarship in international studies from a variety of critical theoretical perspectives including post-colonialism, theories of nationalism, gender studies, public sphere/technology studies, Marxism, race/whiteness, post structuralism, theories of borders/ space/ place, cultural studies, and environmental sustainability/justice. SLO 3: Students graduating from the International Studies program must undertake an analytic thesis project based on widely accepted and practiced methodologies within the social sciences or the humanities.
