Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice

Bachelor of Arts
Roanoke College

The Bachelor of Arts degree program in Criminal Justice approaches criminality through political, sociological, and psychological perspectives. Students take part in a deep exploration of criminal justice issues and practices, while at the same time developing their methodological and theoretical skillsets to analyze and evaluate these issues. Unique to the major are the experiential learning opportunities offered, including the Lutheran College Washington Semester, the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program, and a variety of community-based internships.

Outcomes

We want students to understand how the American criminal justice system functions, and the current challenges it is facing. In so doing, students will become familiar with both criminological theories, and research methodologies in criminal justice. Moreover, students will gain a unique appreciation for the relationship between various social inequalities and the crminal justice system. Students will also become attuned to the relationship between current events in criminal justice and media framing of current events. Through the criminal justice major, students will become critical thinkers, excellent communicators, and sharper consumers of information.

Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree Students who have an interest in developing skills in analyzing issues in contemporary criminal justice and criminology will find the Criminal Justice major an enriching experience. The major provides an interdiscplinary overview of the major areas in the study of criminal justice and criminology. Students have freedom to choose interesting elective courses within these areas, including courses like Inequality in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Juvenile Deliquency, Criminal Justice Forensics, and Juvenile Justice.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Useful choices for transfer credit: introduction to sociology, political science, or criminal justice. Transferring some foreign language courses will help students finish that college requirement faster.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Roanoke College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree Students who complete the Criminal Justice major often take advantage of experiential learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom setting. For example, the Inside Out program invites students to participate in a unique learning experience where they learn as "outsiders" alongside "insiders" who are currently incarcerated in a local jail. Criminal Justice majors also frequently participate in local internships, such as law enforcement agencies and local attorneys' offices.
Program Successes & Highlights Our graduates go on to enter law school, graduate school, and the professional world. Recent graduates include a Harvard University Law student, a PhD student in Criminology, an ATF Agent, and a Behavioral Analyst for the FBI (to name just a few!). Graduates from the Criminal Justice program enter the field with the advantage of having had the opportunity to study and intern in Washington, DC, take classes at local jail alongside inmates, and enroll in a pre-law school "bootcamp" course taught by a local judge.
