Computer Science (BS)
Bachelor of ScienceRandolph-Macon College
The computer science curriculum integrates theory and practice by including foundational topics that underpin the discipline and by emphasizing the value of abstraction and good engineering design in project development. Elective courses provide an opportunity for deeper study in areas of interest. An important part of the curriculum is the inclusion of professional practice activities such as research experience, teamwork, oral communication and technical writing, and project development. While being sensitive to changes in technology, the curriculum also seeks to prepare students for lifelong learning to enable them to meet future challenges.
A student expecting to major or minor in computer science should enroll in CSCI 111-CSCI 112 in the first year. If credit is given for one or both of these courses, then a student should enroll in CSCI 211 or CSCI 210. A student interested in future graduate studies should complete the two calculus sequences, MATH 131-MATH 132. A student interested in computer hardware is encouraged to select PHYS 210 to meet one of the collegiate science requirements.

Considerations for Selecting Degree | Computer Science involves the study of computers, algorithms, programs, and the structures and techniques for the effective management of complex systems of software and data. The computer sceince major at R-MC provides students with both a theoretical foundation in algorithm devlopment and problem solving and practical experience in software development for a wide range of real world applications. Upon completion of the major, which is based on national standards, students are well prepared for further study in graduate school or for a wide range of job opportunities in industry and government agencies. Student chapter of The Associating of Computing Machinery (The ACM), which is the professional and educational society of the computer science discipline. E-Sports We also have a large number of athletes, especially on the football, baseball, basketball (both men’s and women’s teams), and swimming (both men’s and women’s teams). Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon. |

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | A major component of the Computer Science major at R-MC is a focus on effective communication. Effective communication is a cornerstone of the discipline and a necessity for most job opportunities related to Computer Science. As students progress through the upper-level required and elective courses, they are required to complete multiple writing assignments and make multiple classroom presentations on various topics related to the discipline. These assignments provide students multiple opportunities to improve and build their experience in communicating effectively and opportunities to work with individually faculty members to improve in this area as they progress through the program. All of the computer science courses provide hands-on learning opportunties in which students apply the course content to a range of real-world problems. In most cases, this occurs in real-time during course lectures. After being introduced to a basic concept during class, students are routinely asked to apply or implement the concept before progessing to the next topic. In the robotics course, students not only learn how to program a robot to accomplish a specific task, but they must also construct the robot for the specific task. Students at R-MC are required to complete a capstone experience in their senior year. For the computer science major, students must complete a project that applies knowledge obtained from the required content of the major to a real-world problem of their choosing. Our students have the opportuntiy to expand on their work with a problem from an earlier course that is of interest to them or they can explore new areas beyond the courses and topics covered by the major itself. The latter provides a wide range of possibilities and an opportunity not found at most other institutions. |
Doing More With Your Degree | While in the program, students have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with a faculty member. Program Successes & Highlights | The computer science department has state of the art laboratory facilities available for a wide variety of courses and for student and faculty research. The department uses both Windows and Linux systems and has a wide variety of software available for both. Most of the computer science courses, beyond the introductory sequence, rely on the use of Linux systems, which is a resource typically found only at larger research universities. All of our computer labs are accessible to students 24/7 when the college is in session. In addition to desktop computers, the department also has hardware available for courses and research in several popular and existing areas of study, including: robotics, 3-D modeling, systems programming, computer networks, parallel computing, web programming, and high-performance computing. |
