The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is built on a rigorous, highly concentrated, accredited curriculum of computer science courses, and includes concentrations in cybersecurity, data science and software engineering. The program provides a strong foundation in the discipline and includes advanced study in several important areas of computer science. The degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and includes undergraduate requirements, general education requirements and computer science major requirements.

| Considerations for Selecting Degree | Students with an interest in one or more of the following should consider computer science a top choice of major: cybersecurity, data science, software development, artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, cloud computing and more. The math requirement for computer science differs slightly from other College of Engineering majors, where Computer Science majors select two, three credit math courses at the 300-400 level. In addition, students should expect to be involved in hands-on learning each semester, with core labs associated with their major courses. Students are also required to complete an intensive senior design project and choose from a list of high-level STEM courses in order to satisfy the technical/engineering elective requirements. |
| Program Requirement Notes | Program Requirement Notes The B.S. in Computer Science with a concentration in cybersecurity requires a minimum of 120 credits. Students must receive a minimum grade of C in all computer science courses in order to graduate. Based on the results of the Computer Science Placement Test, students may be required to take CMSC 254, which then can count toward the degree requirements as an elective. |
| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Transfer students planning on majoring in Computer Science must complete Calculus I and either General Chemistry I with lab, General Biology I with lab, or University Physics I with grades of A or B and a minimum GPA of 2.5 for immediate admission. Students can also take a combination of the following (Calculus II, Differential Equations, General Chemistry II, General Biology II, University Physics II, and VCCS courses- EGR 206, CSC 201, 202, and 208), and students who complete an AS degree and/or an AS degree with a computer science specialization can expect to receive credit for most courses for earned grades of C or above.

| Doing More With Your Degree | The Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Computer Science (CS) covers core areas of computer science with a focus on data science and cybersecurity. Computer science graduates are in high demand and enjoy excellent employment opportunities after graduation. Students interested in majoring in computer science can elect to earn a concentration in one of three areas including data science, cybersecurity, or software engineering. Students can elect to take part in an internship or Co-op while earning their computer science degree. |

Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived.
