The GLOA BA is offered both in-person and online. Students pursuing the program of study take a core of courses that introduce them to the interdisciplinary study of global issues. In addition, majors choose from a range of possible concentrations that focus on either the study of a global theme or a specific world region. Students can receive credit in the major by doing internships or participating in study abroad programs.

Students interested in Mason are encouraged to focus on completing courses that meet general education requirements. BA degree programs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences have additional requirements in: philosophy or religion, social and behavioral science, foreign language through the intermediate level, and non-western culture. Students are encouraged to use the "Contact an Institution" section of the portal and connect with our staff for questions related to specific course equivalencies and requirements.

To fulfill the Global Affairs foreign language requirement, after demonstrating intermediate proficiency in one foreign language, an additional six credits of courses taught in a foreign language are required. This can be fulfilled by continuing to take courses at higher levels (beyond the course number used to achieve intermediate proficiency) in the language used to fulfill the intermediate proficiency or by choosing to study another language or languages besides the one used to achieve the CHSS proficiency at any level. Students who plan to reach proficiency through a waiver exam should complete this during their first semester at Mason.

Student are encouraged to complete introductory level courses such as GLOA 101 and GOVT 132 or 133 which serve as a pre-requisite for GOVT 322.

Students are also encouraged to take GLOA 305 before they graduate, which focuses on career choices and effective self-presentation for soon-to-be graduating students with majors in Global Affairs. Explores how skills typically learned in humanities majors can be leveraged for a successful transition to post-graduation employment.

GLOA majors can complement their major with a second major or a minor. Undergraduate students can do internships, study abroad, and participate in the Arlington Fellows Programs.

The opportunity to graduate with honors in Global Affairs is open to students with an interest in carrying out an individual research project related to global issues.
