Chemistry is the study of matter — its structure, properties, and the reactions that transform it. The B.S. in Chemistry gives students a rigorous, lab-intensive foundation spanning inorganic, organic, analytical, and physical chemistry, with most courses built around hands-on laboratory work alongside lecture. Students build toward advanced coursework in physical chemistry — covering both quantum mechanics and thermodynamics — and instrumental methods of analysis, the kind of training expected for graduate study or laboratory careers. Specialized electives let students explore areas like forensic science, medicinal chemistry, biogeochemistry, and advanced spectroscopy. Because Chemistry shares substantial coursework with Biochemistry, students may not double major in Chemistry and Biochemistry, or in Biology and Biochemistry.
