Studying philosophy at George Mason gives students the opportunity to think carefully and deeply about themselves and their place in society. A degree in philosophy involves reflection on questions such as the nature of reality, the foundations of knowledge, the existence of God, and the basis of moral obligation. It encourages students to think about their obligations to their fellow human beings and the world at large. Our concentration or minor in Philosophy and law is a great way to get on the "pre-law" track. Philosophy majors tend to score the highest on the GRE and among the highest on the LSAT, GMAT and MCAT. Additionally, philosophy majors have the highest median income among all the humanities majors.

Students interested in Mason are encouraged to focus on completing courses that meet general education requirements. BA degree programs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences have additional requirements in: philosophy or religion, social and behavioral science, foreign language through the intermediate level, and non-western culture. Students are encouraged to use the "Contact an Institution" section of the portal and connect with our staff for questions related to specific course equivalencies and requirements.

For the BA Philosophy, introductory courses for the major (such as PHIL 173) may be completed prior to transfer to Mason.

Consider enrolling in our master's program via the accelerated master's option. The accelerated MA allows students to get a head start by taking up to 6 graduate level courses while finishing the bachelor's in Philosophy and paying the undergraduate tuition rate. Additionally, the philosophy major lends itself well to serving as preparation for law school.

We are distinctive for our commitment to analytic (Anglo-American), continental (European) philosophy, and the history of philosophy. We have a strong dedication and emphasis in philosophy, especially moral philosophy, in health ethics i.e. bioethics, public and global health ethics, the sciences, and technology (e.g. AI). We are also known for foregrounding the value of publicly engaged philosophy by addressing pressing social, political, and global issues in our teaching, scholarship, and policy-oriented work. Faculty take philosophy into other fields such as law, biology, medicine, and global health.
