Considerations for Selecting Degree | Studying philosophy at the University of Lynchburg means launching inquiries into the most abstract and important questions we can raise. What is ultimate reality? How can we live a good life? Is beauty a matter of what you like? What makes actions morally right or wrong? You’ll explore these questions with other students who are as passionate about them as you are. Philosophy majors at Lynchburg learn to analyze, interpret, evaluate, and communicate logically and effectively. Besides courses in ethics and logic, you’ll study different philosophical schools and methods. You’ll also explore your own beliefs and learn how others think about these same issues. When you graduate, your analytical skills will be an asset for any career path you choose. |

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
Doing More With Your Degree | A philosophy degree doesn’t mean you’re going to be a philosopher. It’s an excellent foundation for a variety of careers. Law is one popular option, but philosophy majors can be successful in many different fields. They are creative and analytical thinkers who can approach problems from different perspectives. Companies have realized more and more that we’ve asked scientists and engineers to decide the ethics and morality of the work they do. That’s why many large companies are using a newer executive position called the “chief ethics officer.†This role examines and determines how to make an organization — and employees’ behavior — more ethical. These positions are considered compliance officers, and are ranked No. 17 among the best jobs in business. Growth is expected to be 8% by 2026. |
