Bachelor of ArtsRandolph-Macon College
This program aims to merge a knowledge and appreciation of the visual and performing arts with a foundation in the operating methods and business practices of the organizations and institutions which support and administer the arts. Students electing the arts management major should select an emphasis from among art, theatre, or music.
Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon. Arts management is the behind the scenes work that makes the arts possible. Our program introduces students to the organizational, technical, legal, and financial infrastructure of the arts, while at the same offering students an opportunity to develop their own artistic specialty (i.e. an emphasis in either visual art, film, music, theatre). We offer a path for students who love the arts and also know that their goal is not necessarily to be an artist, but rather to be at the nexus where art is nurtured and cultivated. AMGT majors are involved in all of the arts on campus: studio art, art history, music, theatre. They are part of the various musical ensembles. They are part of the theatre productions. AMGT offers a practical side to the arts. It gives students a background in financial literacy, in marketing, in problem-solving, and in learning how to work with others from different backgrounds to reach a common goal. The internship gives them connections to practitioners in the field. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Students in AMGT often double major in the art that is their emphasis. Business and accounting are also common double majors.
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | Principles of Arts Management (AMGT 201) is designed to explain and connect students with the world of nonprofit arts organizations. The course is structured around guest lectures from professionals at various nonprofit arts organizations from a variety of contexts (museums, theaters, dance companies, music organizations), who share their insights into the practicalities and challenges of the nonprofit arts world. Richmond has a rich arts community, so the opportunities are significant. The capstone in AMGT is an internship with an arts organization. Students work directly with a site supervisor, who tailors their internship to give them practical experience in seeing how arts organizations function, problem-solve, and thrive. Arts management students also are part of the vibrant arts community on R-MC’s campus. They are involved in organizing arts events, supporting the technical aspects of arts events, and helping to manage the events themselves. |
Doing More With Your Degree | |
Program Successes & Highlights | Center for the Performing Arts has provided new, exciting spaces for the arts, featuring the latest technology and lots of hands-on opportunities for students to see how events operate and help with their success. I think our emphasis on making sure the students are fluent in a specific art is unique. We want to give them a grounding in the business side of things, but we also want them to be literate in the arts, be able to speak with artists and understand their circumstances. |
