The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art History leads to careers in museum work, art galleries, arts administration, historic preservation, and interior design, as well as to graduate study in art history. Art history majors at Hollins gain a knowledge of art in context of the world that produced it. Majors progress through chronologically oriented survey courses into upper-level seminars and research projects. The program stresses individual student research and active leadership roles for students in small seminars. Special strengths of the program are January internships, opportunities to study abroad, either for the semester or during January trips led by professors, and also small class sizes in upper-level courses.
Outcomes
SLO 1: Students will be broadly knowledgeable about how works of art and artistic traditions are situated within their social, political and intellectual contexts from the ancient world to contemporary times. SLO 2: Students will think, read and write critically about works of art and become familiar with diverse art historical methodologies. SLO 3: Students will apply their acquired skills in career-related experiences outside Hollins University.
