An Art History major allows students to engage critically with diverse works of visual art from many world regions and historical periods. In the Art History BA program, students learn skills of critical thinking, visual and textual analysis, independent research and writing, communication, and collaboration. The 33-credit degree is flexible and our curriculum allows students to select from numerous options to satisfy their major requirements.

Students interested in Mason are encouraged to focus on completing courses that meet general education requirements. BA degree programs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences have additional requirements in: philosophy or religion, social and behavioral science, foreign language through the intermediate level, and non-western culture. If you do not start a language at your two-year institution, keep in mind that it will take you at least three semesters to fulfill this requirement after transferring to Mason. Students are encouraged to use the "Contact an Institution" section of the portal and connect with our staff for questions related to specific course equivalencies and requirements.

For the Bachelor of Arts in Art History, introductory courses for the major may be completed prior to transfer to Mason. Pay attention to prerequisites and consult the VCCS transfer matrix to see how your courses will transfer to Mason. ART 101 and ART 102 will both apply toward the Art History major after transferring to Mason, but other courses in Art History at the two-year college may only transfer in as electives.

Internships are not required, but students who choose to complete an internship will need to provide their own transportation to and from the internship site.

Because the Art History major requirements are flexible, students often have the opportunity to add a second major or a minor. Examples of majors that coordinate well with Art History are History, Anthropology, Languages, and Arts and Visual Technology. Popular minors include Classical Studies, Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology, Medieval Studies, and Arts Management. Undergraduate students can earn up to 6 credits of advanced-level art history coursework toward the major by completing an internship at a local museum or cultural institution. Advanced students can apply to the Accelerated MA in Art History program, saving time and money toward their graduate degree.
