The B.A. in Art History is a liberal arts program composed of an academic course of study exposing the student to the scholarship, theoretical perspectives and research methods of not only the history of art, but related disciplines in the humanities. Courses focus on cultures, historical periods and regions. The program also includes possibilities for directed research projects as well as museum internships. This curriculum provides students the best possible background for future graduate work in art history.
Outcomes
Upon completing this program, students will know and know how to do the following: Students will demonstrate a command of art historical terminology and the ability to identify key works of art in relationship to historical contexts. Students will demonstrate the ability to conduct rigorous research and write papers that incorporate visual analysis and current scholarship in the interpretation of artworks. Students will demonstrate the ability to read critically and apply art historical research methods used in research papers. Students will demonstrate the ability to interpret works of art in relationship to the historical, cultural and/or geographical contexts in which they were made.

| Considerations for Selecting Degree | This curriculum provides students the best possible background for future graduate work in art history. Additionally, the study of art history prepares students with highly sought after skills in writing and communication, problem solving, critical thinking, creative expression, cultural awareness, independent thought, organization and research, and advocacy. Current students take advantage of multiple internship opportunities in Richmond’s vibrant art community to gain practical experience, and alumni of the program may hold positions in the public and private art worlds, government, nonprofits, and businesses, depending upon their interests and expertise. |

| Doing More With Your Degree | The accelerated B.A. and M.A. program allows academically talented students to earn both the B.A. and M.A. in Art History in a minimum of five years by completing approved graduate courses during the senior year of their undergraduate program. The accelerated program may be undertaken in either concentration. Students in the program may count up to 12 hours of graduate courses toward both the B.A. and M.A. degrees. Thus, the two degrees may be earned with a minimum of 138 credits rather than the 150 credits necessary if the two degrees are pursued separately. |
| Program Successes & Highlights | VCU Art History majors and minors find that studying abroad is one of the most rewarding experiences available to them. In recent years, students have traveled to Egypt, Spain, Peru, Italy, Nepal, UK, France, and Germany. Art History majors also get an insider perspective on the multifaceted concerns, distinctive needs, and diverse interests of arts and cultural institutions through internships. They polish marketable skills such as an ability to work collaboratively and the practical necessity to write and communicate clearly to a range of audiences. |

Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived. Some degree programs like Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Engineering have more competitive GPA requirements. Admission to programs in VCU Arts is also based on an evaluation of additional application materials and may be more competitive. Transfer applicants with fewer than 24 earned semester (36 quarter) hours will also be reviewed based on their high school GPA.
