Program Overview & Guidance

---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | This is a studio art degree with the flexibility to concentrate in drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, digital illustration, mixed media and ceramics. Most studio classes in the program are scheduled face-to-face during the afternoons between 1:30 and 8 pm. Monday through Thursdays. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
2D Design, Drawing, Painting serves as prerequisites
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | The College's general education program has an international studies requirement; the student has the option of completing this abroad in a number of ways. If the student is unable to study abroad, the curriculum has a number of courses that substitute on-campus without studying abroad. The internship is optional in the program but strongly recommended. The internship requires students to provide their own transportation. The College has fully functioning updated computers with all design software necessary to complete the coursework and prepare for future employment in the design field. Students are generally expected to provide materials for their studio coursework. |
Doing More With Your Degree | Students generally pursue this degree with a double major in another field. Students have gone on to achieve their Ph. D., M.F.A. and M.A. at the graduate level after graduating from Emory & Henry College. Our students have completed graduate degrees in printmaking, painting, art history and art therapy; they have completed graduate programs at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Goddard College, the Institute for Doctoral Studies, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Tennessee. Most have careers as artists, art professors, art therapists and curators. |
Program Successes & Highlights | We are most proud of our art students who are the creative force on campus. The adventurous individuals are awarded a solo exhibition in one of the college's student gallery. At the conclusion of each academic year, all graduating seniors are honored with a group exhibition in the Gallery at the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. Emory & Henry's art program has excellent facilities in design, painting, ceramics, printmaking, drawing, photography and digital art. Our experienced professors all hold their terminal degrees and they all actively practice and professionally exhibit their work throughout the United States. Most importantly, our faculty members are dedicated teachers committed to the success of their students. We are DEIB committed. The Art Department works in collaboration with William King Museum of Art (A nationally accredited museum in nearby Abingdon, Virginia) providing additional internships, workshops, shadowing experiences with artists, and programs. The College's gallery at the McGlothlin Center for the Arts provides programming that includes a number of nationally recognized visiting artists each year. These artists interact with our students in class workshops, gallery installations, and informally at meals. Many of our students are employed in this gallery, which provides real world experience in gallery management. The Art department is home to the college's longest running study abroad program to Italy where students travel to Rome, Pompeii, Siena, and Florence to study art history in at the physical presence of many of the world's art masterworks. |
