Transfer Guides are designed to maximize transfer credit as students complete their associate degree at the community college before transferring to the bachelor's degree program. The Art program at Longwood is located in the Bedford Building. Bedford is one of the buildings in the Fine Arts Complex. The Bedford Building includes studios for graphic and animation design, printmaking, book arts, textiles, ceramics, crafts, painting, stained glass, jewelry, paper making, photography and drawing, as well as outdoor work areas, and exhibition galleries. The Art programs at Longwood University are dedicated to the development of emerging artists, designers, historians, and art educators by providing an environment that fosters creative, conceptual, and intellectual growth with a high level of formal and technical skills, through close interaction with a faculty of working artists, designers, and educators. In order to graduate in a minimum of two years, transfer students must have completed the following foundations studio courses prior to admission to the university: ART 120 - Foundations of Contemporary Design, ART 130 - Drawing I, and ART 131 - Life Drawing, ART 223 - Three-Dimensional Design. All other transfer students should expect to graduate in a minimum of three years. All art majors will receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual and Performing Arts degree. The Civitae Core Requirements will be identical for each concentration. Department of Theatre, Art, and Graphic and Animation Design degree requirements also vary by degree as specified in the catalog. The Art program also offers tailored programs of study for students who wish to minor in studio art or art history. Students interested in a minor in general art or art history should contact the Department Chair for advising.

As you enter the Art Education Program at Longwood in stride with your peers, it’s encouraged to have a preliminary foundation in studio and art history core curriculum as well as education and pass the Virginia Communication and Literacy (VCLA) assessment tests.

| Doing More With Your Degree | Majors in this program have a diverse studio background and select a mini-concentration in one of the following areas: art history, artists books and printmaking, design in crafts, graphic design, painting and drawing or photography. Artistic opportunities include participating in summer craft school programs/internships, completing apprenticeships, and connecting with professionals through our Working Artist Program and Visiting Artist workshops. Students will have many hours of practicum experience to help hone theory into practice. Art education graduates may transition into Longwood’s +1 program in Special Education earning dual licensure. Art education students with a minor in psychology have successfully transitioned into Masters in Art Therapy programs. |
| Program Successes & Highlights | All art education students complete multiple practicums with diverse populations. Students also create a body of work (or art historical research) that is professionally and publicly exhibited in the community. Our graduates establish vital mentor-mentee relationships with faculty, members of the artistic community and educators as a touchstone to further their careers. Recent graduates have transitioned into teaching positions throughout Virginia and out of state. Recent graduates have also transitioned into art therapy graduate programs as well as transitioned into Longwood’s +1 special education program where students teach while earning their special education degree. |
