This is a strongly interdisciplinary major that allows students to pursue one area in great depth while encouraging collaboration with other performing arts as much as possible. We recognize that students may be interested in specific disciplines, so the performing arts major has three tracks - dance, music and theatre.

Considerations for Selecting Degree This major is for students who want to pursue one area in great depth while collaborating with other performing arts. There are three tracks to choose from for the main area of study -- dance, music, and theatre.

Select one of three tracks - Dance, Music, or Theatre. Depending on the track selected, the major requires 32.0 to 41.0 hours of coursework. Each track also includes a senior performance/seminar.

Considerations When Selecting Courses

First-year course selections are dependent on the track the student is interested in pursuing.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Sweet Briar College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree Pair this major with minors in other performance arts for further depth of study. We also offer teacher licensure. Sweet Briar offers a certificate in arts management that enhances the interdisciplinary nature of the performing arts.
Program Successes & Highlights Sweet Briar has a close connection to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts that brings in working artists that interacts with students. Graduates of the program pursue a variety of paths, including: graduate study, professional performance, music and drama therapy, teaching, composing, choreographing, musical directing, design, banking, and law.

Associate Transfer Degree Completion Exemption from the general education requirement, our Leadership Core.

Completion of an associates degree (AA,AS, or AA&S) replaces Sweet Briar's required leadership core curriculum, the college's version of traditional general education requirements. Eligible students may move directly into coursework that fulfills the requirements of their major of choice.

Is This College Right For Me? Sweet Briar has a total enrollment of about 460 students, of which approximately 80 are transfer students. Our average class size is about 12 and the vast majority of our students live on campus.

Other Financial Aid to Pay for College:
  • You may be eligible for additional financial aid from Federal, State, and Local sources. Military education benefits are not considered in determining eligibility for federal financial aid. Everyone is therefore encouraged to apply for federal financial aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), because many will qualify for additional educational funds like Pell Grants, worth over $5,500/yr.
