Program Overview & Guidance

Considerations for Selecting Degree | A BFA degree celebrates the complex intersections of communication, creativity, learning, and making. This degree requires weekly committed studio hours, yearly portfolio reviews, and a junior proposal that results in a senior thesis exhibition at the Longwood Center of the Visual Arts, Longwood University’s art museum. In studying art/photography students develop strong verbal communication and critical thinking skills during regular critiques of their artwork and the work of others. Informed by historic precedents and contemporary ideas and experiences students engage in coursework in which they explore a wide range of traditional and non-traditional photographic techniques and practices. The degree also includes a course in Professional Practices which assists in the development of professional materials for working artists, such as a CV, artist statement, website and completing applications for various exhibition and grant opportunities. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
As you enter the BFA Photography Program at Longwood, it’s encouraged to have a preliminary foundation or interest in the core curriculum, such as basic black and white (darkroom) photography, digital photography, related media, and two & three-dimensional design. Having experience with other foundational requirements such as drawing, painting, and art history will also expedite the degree process.

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
Doing More With Your Degree | Majors in Photography focus on traditional or contemporary approaches and practices. This generalization is informed by photography’s unique position in the world and its broad applications and functions. Student opportunities include participating in summer craft school programs/internships, completing apprenticeships, and connecting with professionals through our Working Artist Program and Visiting Artist workshops, volunteering or interning at the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, and photography jobs. Adding a minor in social work, business, history, or psychology can diversify key professional skills and inform an art making practice. Minoring in photography prepares students to build a critical eye in evaluating pictures, how/when they are used, and builds a vocabulary around photographs and the image making process. |
Program Successes & Highlights | All students in this major complete a body of work that is professionally and publicly exhibited in the community. Our graduates establish vital mentor-mentee relationships with faculty and members of the artistic community as a touchstone to further their careers. Recent graduates have continued their studies at prominent graduate schools in the United States and abroad. Our alumni are employed in the field creatively working as professional studio artists, gallery assistants, art handlers, photographers, art therapists, residency directors, conservators, and library science specialists. |
