Program Details
English (BA)
Bachelor of ArtsRandolph-Macon College
Through the study and creation of literature, English majors can deepen their understanding of human nature, society, and history, while at the same time honing their powers of expression. The major thus caters to a wide variety of students, from those with a lifelong love of language and reading, to those who write poetry and fiction, to those eager to understand how language may be used to entertain, move, or persuade. English majors inevitably spend much time thinking and writing about the stuff of literature - abiding matters such as love, death, and power - but the insights they will take away about the wellsprings of human action, along with the skill to promote their views forcefully, have repeatedly shown themselves valuable in an array of professions as various as law, advertising, teaching, and politics.

The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | Students in a seminar on Charles Dickens used virtual reality equipment to “travel†to the location of his unfinished novel, a murder mystery. They explored the scene of the crime in order to plot their own solutions to the mystery, which they wrote about in a final project “finishing†the novel. Students in a course on narrative (“Snow White and the Seven Genresâ€) read “Snow White†in a variety of mediums: fairy tale, film, poem, play, even video game. They studied how different genres told stories and used this knowledge to create their own stop-motion films, which they screened for the class. Students in Children’s Literature adopted a “reading buddy†from the local elementary school and helped encourage their buddy’s love for reading through weekly reading sessions. At the end of the semester, students created a children’s book for their reading buddy, based on their buddy’s interests and on what they learned about children’s literature in class. |
