The Department of Communication Studies offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a curriculum that prepares students for a wide variety of career opportunities as well as graduate school. Our majors have gone on to careers in higher education, sports marketing, journalism, the travel industry, public relations, and social media, just to name a few. Others have completed advanced degrees at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, West Virginia University, the University of Georgia, Virginia Tech, ETSU, and the University of Virginia.

Considerations for Selecting Degree | This degree path emphasizes both written and oral communication and includes 9 hours of research/statistics. All courses in the program underscore critical thinking, research skills, and varying oral communication skills. Doing More With Your Degree | This degree will help prepare you for a career or graduate schools and will emphasize topics in communication, journalism, media studies. It also requires nine credit hours of research coursework. After taking introductory courses, students can choose to focus on courses in media studies, interpersonal communication, rhetorical analysis, and/or public relations. Students will also learn to use both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The Lambda Pi Eta communication studies honor society, Highland Cavalier newspaper, Appalachian Writing Project, and Center for Appalachian Studies offer students additional opportunities for engagement, professional development and scholastic achievement in communication studies. |
Program Successes & Highlights | Students in communications get to experience real-world internship opportunties. Students can easily complete the major and a selected minor in 120 hours. Individualized advising with a clear four-year path. |

What If I Have An Associate Degree Or Credit For Prior Learning?

Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Completion of an Associates of Arts or Associate if Science degree will fullfill all general education requirements at Wise with the exception of foreign language and four cultural activity credits. Depending on the major of choice, some general education courses may fulfil major requirements. If you have a completed Associate of Arts or Science degree complete, you will be able to step right into your major and begin the work on completing your bachelor's degree at UVA WISE. |
