The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program in English and Creative Writing provides majors with many opportunities, including the following: - enhanced powers of expression through the close reading of texts - the free exchange of ideas in a supportive and demanding environment - the production of original works of poetry, prose, and literary analysis - an imaginative perception of experience, which can enhance the pleasure, value, and understanding that students find in literature and in living - improved control of the English language - preparation for graduate study in literature, creative writing, and related fields - preparation for the multitude of careers in which communication and analytical skills are prized.

Outcomes

SLO 1: Students graduating with a major in English will demonstrate the ability produce a well-developed, well-organized, and cohesive literary analysis, skillfully using textual evidence to support a clear thesis. SLO 2: Students in the program will be able to complete an extended critical or creative project (of at least 2000 words) that incorporates revision and attention to form, language, audience, and historical or contemporary context. SLO 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to discuss texts (or films, plays, and performances) with precision and insight, by developing their own ideas and applying critical strategies.

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Completion of a qualifying VCCS associate degree program will guarantee completion of the general education component of the Hollins undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major.
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School Students earning an associate degree while in high school are not eligible for guaranteed admission programs and must complete general education courses. All courses are evaluated and transferred as applicable to your degree.
Credit for Prior Learning We accept AP and IB results for college credit if the score earned meets college expectations. Transfer credits will be considered for CLEP (College Level Examination Program) on an individual basis for examinations if Hollins offers a comparable course.
