The major in English is particularly helpful for students who wish to teach English at the secondary level, pursue careers in writing or editing, attend law school or prepare for theological studies, or pursue studies in literature at the graduate level. Combined with other appropriate studies, the major in literature is excellent preparation for the fields of medicine and business.

Considerations for Selecting Degree The English major has an application process and consists of a broad range of English classes such as Chaucer to Modern American Poets and Literary Theory to 19th Century British literature. Six hours of a second level of intermidiate foreign language is required.

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree Students often take advantage of the opportunity to get a Secondary Education minor that will enable to teach at the high school level. Department minors include French, German, Hispanic and Hispanic-American Studies, and Spanish. Graduates may pursue jobs in teaching, publishing, corporate technical writing, medicine, law as well as graduate school opportunities in literature, writing and pedagogy, and more.
Program Successes & Highlights Undergraduate research. Creative writing and publishing opportunities. Study abroad. Students may also apply to the Peake Honors program in English and this is highlighted on the student transcript.

Associate Transfer Degree Completion Completion of an Associates of Arts or Associate if Science degree will fullfill all general education requirements at Wise with the exception of foreign language and four cultural activity credits. Depending on the major of choice, some general education courses may fulfil major requirements.

If you have a completed Associate of Arts or Science degree complete, you will be able to step right into your major and begin the work on completing your bachelor's degree at UVA WISE.
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School If you have a completed Associate of Arts or Science degree complete, you will be able to step right into your major and begin the work on completing your bachelor's degree at UVA WISE.
Credit for Prior Learning UVA Wise accepts CLEP, AP, IB and Cambridge credits for students who meet specified scores.

    • Students that take more than 18 hour per semester are charged $250 per credit hour but no additional fees apply.

  • You may be eligible for additional financial aid from Federal, State, and Local sources. Military education benefits are not considered in determining eligibility for federal financial aid.
